Subject: US opera singer Beverly Sills dies at 78
Written By: Philip Eno on 07/03/07 at 1:55 am
One of America's most prominent opera singers, Beverly Sills, has died at her home in New York.
She was 78, and had been suffering from lung cancer.
Ms Sills, a coloratura soprano, began performing in 1955 with the New York City Opera, where she sang many of her best-known roles.
She made her debut at New York's renowned Metropolitan Opera in 1975. She also performed at La Scala in Milan and at Covent Garden in London.
Beverly Sills retired from singing in 1980, at the age of 51.
But she remained in the public eye, both as a high-profile arts administrator and TV host.
Although she died from lung cancer, she never smoked.

Very sad day for the world of music. She was a tremendous talent, as well as an active participant in making the Opera world a better place. :\'(

R.I.P. Mrs. Sills :\'(
Whenever I hear her name, I always think of a line in the movie adaptation of Dragnet, where Joe Friday and Pep Strebeck were at Police HQ grilling the crook Emil Muzz, and after awhile, Friday noticed he was "singing like Beverly Sills"
