He was born in the same place my brother lives....Norfolk, Nebraska
I loved him! As Karnac The Magnificent he once said to Ed McMahon: May a weird mathemetician do a number on your sister!"

How very sad indeed. I just watched the special on Dateline NBC. And the sad thing is that he could have prevented the disease that eventually took his life. We will miss you, Johnny. :\'( :\'( :\'(

I heard about it on the news at noon today, and there wasn't anything mentioned on here yet. I am stunned. He was a funny, funny man and will truly be missed. :\'(
I'm not a religious person, but they showed this sign on TV. I thought it was nice:
R.I.P. JOHNNY
MAKE GOD LAUGH
I'm sure he will...if there is one.

I never saw Carson until I was in my teens.  My parents hated him.  I discovered him for myself in '84 and watched him regularly until he retired.
Like Elvis, Johnny was an American icon I genuinely liked.  I liked Carson for the same reasons most people did--his friendly mannner, the ease of his delivery (he made it look effortless), and the fun familiarity of the "Tonight Show" set-up.
Carson got started in the days before niche TV.  He wasn't playing to the "young hipsters," the "middle-aged women," or the "older crowd," he was playing to YOU.  Not everyone could fill such a tall order, but Carson did, and with great success.  I think the only people who DIDN'T like Carson were killjoys like my dad.
I don't think there will ever be another host with same kind of universal appeal as Johnny.  Jay is successful, but he's no Johnny, that's for sure.  To me, it always felt like the "Tonight Show" was still Johnny's, even after ten years of Leno.
Whoever and whatever Carson was off camera I'll never really know.  But it doesn't matter.  I am just one of the many millions with a special place in his heart for the late Johnny Carson.

That's awful :\'( I've never seen his show, but I'm sure he's better than Leno. That guy owns what, 300 sports cars? He could feed many people or save a forest with that money! Letterman's supposed to be jerky too.

I too was saddened to hear of the passing of Johnny Carson. He was truly one of a kind, and from all accounts he was a very generous man who helped an entire generation of comedians get their start in show business. I was always surprised that he completely disappeared from the public eye after his retirement, and I always was hoping that he would show up unannounced on Letterman's show just to drop in and say hi. For our younger members who may not be familiar with Carson's unique brand of humor, there is a series of DVD's with highlights from his 30 years on the Tonight Show, which I recommend.
My favorite Carnac joke:
Answer: Chicken Teriyaki.
Question: Name the only surviving Japanese kamikaze pilot.
R.I.P. Johnny. :\'(

I found this RealVideo clip of the Tonight Show from 1989 where Johnny Carson is interviewing Jane Fonda, and he debunks an infamous urban legend about an exchange he had with Zsa Zsa Gabor. Hilarious!!!
