Subject: Intermittent Technical Issues w/Embedded YouTubes - Is It Just Me?
Written By: AmericanGirl on 05/21/24 at 4:20 pm
Over the last month or so (since a Firefox update) I've had intermittent technical issues with embedded YouTube on this site, such that the IFrames containing the YouTube thumbnail collapse and I can't see it. This only happens on Firefox to my knowledge, but it's my preferred browser. I'll preface by saying my computer is old and still runs Windows 7. (Other things work in general.)
Has anyone else seen this strange issue?
Thankfully over the past couple days I'm not having the issue. But I'm also not ready to declare it fixed yet.

I use Windows 7 & Firefox and haven't had issues. Of course I am not on my computer too much these days but when I am, I haven't noticed.
Have you cleaned out the Firefox cache?

Thanks, Cat. I've cleaned the cache repeatedly. Most recently I haven't had the issue, so it might be fixed, but we'll see.

The issue is back. :-\\ I noticed that even our very old Windows XP computer didn't have the same problem (although I don't play any videos on it; too little memory).

You could try doing a defrag.
Or it would be a pain in the @$$, but you could try uninstalling Firefox an reinstalling it.
You could do a system restore that will bring your computer back to before the update but you would lose anything you had installed after. (Won't affect your files- only programs and you can't use the computer as it is in progress which could take about a half hour to 45 minutes. )
I would try the defrag first. It is the least intrusive thing.

Thanks Cat for the suggestions. I don't think I'll do anything to this old computer, as other things basically work, and the problem doesn't recur on different browsers. I might try downgrading Firefox to an older version, if I can figure it out.

Defragging doesn't hurt. It is basically a scan. Disc clean-up is also helpful. Those are things you should do on a regular basis. If you don't know, you go to computer, right click on your hard drive and go down to properties. It will prompt you to do a disc clean-up. You can get to defrag in the tools option.

As an experiment, I tried using this same computer for the site but using the "admin" login instead of mine. What do you know, it worked properly, even on Firefox. This makes me suspect there's some process running in my account that is causing the issue...

As I was having additional issues with Firefox, I finally tried its browser-provided "Refresh Firefox" feature, and that seemed to make a big difference! I'm pleased with the outcome. Hopefully that's the end of it.

You mean when Firefox runs into a issue and they tell you to "Restart Firefox"? ???

Not quite. Restarting Firefox can be as simple as closing and reopening the browser. Refreshing is running a tool run from Firefox to actually rebuild the browser software. It is buried in the 3-hash menu under "Help -> More troubleshooting information" which pops up a new window containing the "Refresh Firefox" command button. It's a little drastic because it disables your personalizations (it does attempt to keep bookmarks and login info), but for me with the browser "broken" I needed to do that. And it worked.
