Subject: Search Engine?
Written By: Voiceofthe70s on 04/05/20 at 8:08 pm
I'm just curious about something. Is there a reason the search engine on this site does not work? It hasn't worked since I've been around here anyway. The only reason I thought of it is because I was trying to remember if I already posted a certain song, and if I did it would have been some time ago, and the only way I can find out is by checking all my posts or searching page by page. Not the end of the world but I was just thinking how convenient the search engine would be in such a situation.

I'm guessing like a lot of old sites the search algorithm is very inefficient, takes up a lot of bandwidth and is prone to crashing the site.

You can search this site using Google if at the end of your search string add the following:
site:http://www.inthe00s.com
For example if you want to find instances of "Doobie Brothers" on this site, in Google type:
"doobie brothers" site:http://www.inthe00s.com
Incidentally, years ago "search" used to work on this site. It hasn't worked for a number of years.

That's true, but it'll only take you to the archived editions of the posts. Those sections are updated periodically, although some of them haven't been updated in several years. Still, it'll give you a general idea of what's there.

It did work when there were a small number of active threads on here, but the increasing volume of posts has put more memory on the server, and the search engine would eventually crash it. That's why the search feature was eventually disabled.

The exact method as I used.

Chucky disabled the search a long time ago. I can't remember why-I believe it was because it was messing things up one way or another.
I also use Google-with quotes. i.e. "inthe00s.com"

Just goes to show the importance of algorithms and why we need kids to study math. Facebook can search its database of billions of users and bring up relevant results, even if you enter in a typo, and do it all within a fraction of a second. All thanks to good algorithms. 8)
inthe00s or SMF (the forum software) is an old website/software and likely didn't and continues to not index its threads and posts properly. The search algorithm probably has not been updated in decades and does not comply with best practices used today. It isn't really built to handle archives as large as inthe00s', it would likely crash the website and be very expensive to run.

Cost? I don’t know for certain but there is surely some cost in hosting these boards.

It wouldnt be good on "MODERN" software... It would look like crap and not run well either....
This SW is fine and it works ON ALL BROWSERS in use now (From IE6 up)
I am on several SMF sites that the search DOES WORK WELL so Im not sure why Chuck Disabled it.... All he told me years ago was it causes problems.. (I dunno what kinda problems other than heavy loads if alot are doing it at once..... That must be what he meant)

He probably told you it causes problems because there's way too many posts on the server to search from (over 3 million of them in almost 16 years' time).

I believe Google has a way of indexing the site on their side so everything including the archives can be searched. When I try a search on inthe00s.com on Google, the top hit is:
Try Google Search Console
www.google.com/webmasters/
Do you own inthe00s.com? Get indexing and ranking data from Google.
It would be really helpful to be able to search, especially as time goes on and more topics are written and posts made.
