Subject: Thread search?
Written By: Green Lantern on 09/04/07 at 10:03 am
Hi Chucky
Well .... I notice you're online at the moment .. although I suspect by the time I've typed this ... you'll be gone again.
There may well be an answer to this q .. maybe in this very area ....
I started a new topic earlier .. with no idea if a thread already existed with a similar topic name etc;
:-[ :-[ :-[ It was the case .. as I quickly discovered.
If I go to 'inthe00s' google search ... all I seem to get is archived threads. I can't even find a thread that I know the name of by searching. Is it just me ... a bit dumb?
E.g. 'The person above me' ... 'The person below me' ... are in two different areas. I want to track them down .... by search. How?
:-\\
:)

Do what I do, have your favourite threads store in "Your Favourties", then you have instant access to whichever thread you require.

Well, thanks for the idea Phil... which sounds worth pursuing .. but what if I just want to search on a keyword ... about a thread ... which may be well down a few pages .. or which I'm not sure if its an idea that's been explored before?

The stress of google and other search engines trying to index the board was too much, so I redirect them to only index the archived threads. So if the thread is new (less than two or three months old) it probably won't appear.
The software does have a built in search function, but I had to disable it, because the site is too big for it to handle properly without dragging the server down. There's supposed to be a replacement I can install, but I tried it once before on the last server and couldn't get through all of the steps.
The favorites thing is useful, so is the new replies to your posts link for stuff you know you've posted in already.

There was a Search function back in the day, but it had to be deleted because it takes up too much bandwidth, especially as the number of threads grew. I kinda miss it too, but it's manageable without it.
I like looking back at old threads myself. One thing I might recommend which makes it a little easier, is to set your preferences to 100 threads and replies per page, as opposed to the default 15. That at least makes it far less individual pages to scroll through. But there's nothing wrong with starting a new thread usually, especially if the old one is buried in the board graveyard.
^ P.S. Chucky, you beat me to it by less than 3 minutes. ;D

Something I've tried to communicate time and again. If the old thread hasn't been touched in a week or two, it's perfectly fine to start a new one if you want.
Nothing worse than someone wasting a post by whining that "we already had a thread on this subject". To that person I would respond "Hey, if the original thread was so great, why did you not post in it for a month then?" If a new thread is started on an abandoned thread, just post a link to the old one in the first couple posts and mention it and move on to posting in the new one. A lot of sites automatically lock old threads after a set amount of weeks anyways. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to start doing that here, so people don't feel obligated to bump some ancient thread rather than start a new one.
Basically, I don't want people to be afraid of starting new threads.

Hey Marty ... at first ... after trying your adjustment to the 15 default ... I thought ... 'hey ... this is 'neat' ....' a good idea. However... I now see a downside.
If you've got a page full of pics like some 'bar-stewards' here ... love to submit (hey! what you looking at me like that for! )
... well , it can take ages to come up 'Done'. In the mean time ... it's chewing up your bandwidth limit. So ... actually, less than 15 would be better in the case that you've seen a lot of the preceding before ... is what I'm thinking!
As for the 'favourites' .... that's sounding like 'Internet explorer' to me ... which I don't use. Sounds like 'bookmarks' to me ... in Firefox!
