Subject: Broken Quotes, Dead Links
Written By: Red Ant on 02/26/07 at 1:03 pm
I've noticed many older quoted lines have been changed - here's an example:
http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=19890.0
Everyone who quoted Jason (whistledog) had their entire posts transformed into this:
"[quote author=wһіѕ"
I've seen this elsewhere too, though I don't remember the link at the moment.
Also, looking over the SOTM thread link from Amiright, every link save the one Claude just put up is busted.
The links look like this: http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php/topic,24732.0.html
changing them to this: http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=24732.0.html
makes them work (the fourth / to a ? and the comma to an = sign)
I'd change them manually, but I'm guessing this is a board-wide thing.

Two different things going on there:
The quote thing... may be caused by whistledog's funky ascii names he used to use. Might have been something that got corrupted during the restoration of the messages, or from the conversion of the database into UTF-8, which has expanded support for international characters.
Since it's been two weeks no, I can't really go back to the old database from before the crash and experiment and figure out what happened.
As for the song of the month links, I can easily explain that. That's because I changed the configuration of the server. Links used to be rewritten by the server to exclude the ? character. It was supposed to make it easier or more attractive for search engines to index the messageboard. When I had to rebuild the server, I didn't turn that option on again, because it requires the server to run in a less secure manner, and the search engines weren't helping the site anyways.
I'm not sure if I have a tool to fix all the broken links that people may have used over the years or not. It's buried in the database. I'm sure it can be done, I just don't know if I have the time to devote to it.
