Subject: New Game - Find a song ChuckyG likes
Written By: ChuckyG on 11/25/09 at 2:47 pm
I've spent a couple months compiling a list of my favorite songs. I've finished looking through most of my CD collection as well as the entire Billboard Hot 100 from 1955 to 2009. This is what I've come up with, ChuckyG's Loved Tracks.
The game is simple. Use the new YouTube tags tp link a to a song (preferably a studio version not a live one) that you think I might like based on the songs in my list. Points are scored if I like it, with more points earned based on how well I like it and you lose a point if you don't look before you post and post something already listed in my loved list.
Point Table
PointsEarned by...
-1Song already listed
0Couldn't listen to more than 1/3rd of song
1Listened to entire song, but didn't care one way or another for it
5Liked it well enough to bookmark it
10LOVED IT!
How to find songs I might like?
Well, if it reached the Billboard Hot 100 I already evaluated it. For instance, there's nearly no songs listed by Madonna on the Loved List. Probably safe that I won't like any additional songs by her. Genres that I dislike would be Country, Hip Hop & Techno. There are some tracks in my list, but they're far and few between.
So if you know a group that isn't popular yet, but sounds like a group I have several tracks for already, that would be a safe bet. Album tracks for a particular group that I have a couple songs for already, but didn't chart might also be a safe bet. I know I'm missing a lot of 90s alternative music that I like as well, since most rock groups didn't release singles in the 90s (and hence didn't make the Hot 100, only the AOR/Modern Rock Tracks Charts).
You can post up to five songs in a post - but you have to wait to post more until I review them. I thought this would be an interesting way for me to discover new music (and maybe for others to find new stuff based on what's listed as well).
250 points earns you a medal that is yet to be designed (maybe a music note?)

oops.. I meant to amend the rules to state one song per day... lots to listen to... a couple I know...
Ray Stevens, "I'm My Own Grandpa" - 1 point (a classic, but I've heard it enough times to last a lifetime)
Denis Leary, "A**hole" - 5 points... another classic from a former Worcester,MA resident
Big Wrek, "The Oaf" - 1 point... more local boys... never heard it before... kinda repetitive
Sevendust, "Waffle" - 1 point - hey neat, I never knew the lead singer was black. I like the bass, but it kinda doesn't do much for me
Puddle of Mud, "Blurry" - 10 points. yeah, I like this stupid song. Not sure why I left it off when I went through their stuff. Overplayed I guess.
18 points already...

Oops. Yeah, you know "I'm an Asshole". I took one song out of tags, didn't realize the f-bomb was going to show up in the title.

oh yeah, I did do the post. It's not up on the website though because I generally don't add novelty songs to that collection. I skipped a lot of Weird Al stuff and Tom Lehrer, though I might change that. Not sure if one a day is too few, or if maybe i should make it five a day. Probably should have people list the songs/titles so I can easily add a score next to it.

I have seen this group preform many, many times & have almost all of their albums. Unfortunately, the lead singer on this song passed away almost 2 years ago or so. :\'( :\'( :\'( He was a really nice guy. (Yes, I knew him-not well, but he was an acquaintance.)

Sorry it took me so long to start listening to these... for some reason I was having problems with youtube the other day, and then a storm hit which consumed more of my time than I care to admit. My goal is to do this more often than once a week, trust me.
you don't have to worry about the video quality of the video, generally I won't be watching them, just listening while I do other stuff.
ninny
Coheed and Cambria, "The Suffering" - 1 point - no opinion really... I think the singer's voice is not one I like
The Chesterfield Kings, "Up and Down" - 5 points - not bad... the singer reminds me a bit of Mick Jagger in the way he sings (not the he sounds like Mick, just the way he accents the words)
Kim Mitchell, "All We Are" - 1 point... ugh, that seemed to just go on. he should have gone for soda instead
Glen Campbell sings Paul McCartney's Mull of Kintyre - 1 point - not a fan of the McCartney version, but this is definitely better.
bookmistress4ever
Band of Horses, "The General Specific" - 1 point - pleasant.. doesn't stand out to me
David Gray, "Babylon" - 5 points - this is pretty good, a little mellow for my tastes, but I could see listening to this again
Ephraim Lewis, "Drowning in Your Eyes" - 5 points - another mellow track... it's nice and smooth
catwomanofv
Wood's Tea Company, "St. Patrick's Day in America" - 1 point... it's nice, but I generally don't listen to world music
Philip Eno
Tom Robinson Band, "2-4-6-8 Motorway" - -1 point - definitely have that one. it wasn't a hit in the US, but I found it on a couple 80s compilations in the early 90s.
Sir Edward Elgar, "Pomp And Circumstance March No. I" - 0 points... um no... really no.
Laurie Anderson - O Superman (For Massenet) - -1 point - you got to check the list first man... definitely have that one too
DJ Blaze
Journey - When You Love A Woman - 1 point - I have lots of Journey on my list, this wasn't one of them. I don't recognize it, but it's too sleepy for me.
Henk
Gary Moore & Phil Lynott, "Out In The Fields" - 5 points... sounds like it should be played in an arena... in 1984
John Hiatt, "Have A Little Faith In Me" - 1 point. it's nice, but I think he's done better stuff in the past.
I'm scoring anything 5 points that is by someone I don't already have a favorite song for that sounds like someone to add to my list of groups to further revisit later. When I was building the initial list I kept a running list of groups from the last fifteen years that I wanted to investigate even if I didn't have a favorite.

ok. I'm reopening this thread, and will be posting scores in an hour or two.
I got a little busy trying to review all the songs in my loved folder (making sure I had the right song, it was glitch free, the right version, etc). Took me the better part of 6 months to listen to the 6,400 tracks properly and I've still got another day or two to fix the bad tracks. I totally need a break from listening to the stuff I know, so I'm rather motivated at this point to try stuff I don't know.
I'm also making a new folder on one of my mp3 drives for the stuff that might not make the "loved" folder, but scores a 5 here because it might be worth listening to again.

DJ Blaze - Hymn To The Brave by Freedom Call. - 1 point... I tried it twice... it's not really my style of music.. it's like heavy metal meets a British drinking song
Odyssey - Sublime, "Sangria" - 5 points... I certainly know it well enough... not sure I love it, but definitely a "liked" song.

LOL at British drinking song. I personally find it to be heavy metal meets a medieval ballad, but to each his own, I guess. I'll find something even more epic later.
