interesting... ok, if you say so.
one of the most sarcastic definitions I've read on wikipedia:
Although cover versions are often produced for artistic reasons, they are commonly released to fill bargain bins in the music section of supermarkets and even specialized music stores, where uninformed customers can easily confuse them with original recordings (especially when they feature sound-alikes) because the packaging is often intentionally confusing. It combines the name of the original artist, written in large letters, with a tiny disclaimer like as originally sung by or as made popular by.

Seriously, not by my definition. At least in Australia, such practices reached epidemic proportions. I hated it, in the days where I had little money and used to buy CD's. Buying virtually any compilation was almost a complete lottery.
Specially when they were shrink-wrapped and some of the disclaimers found above could only be found INSIDE after the plastic came off >:(
In time, I learned which 'brands' to start avoiding ;)

Just saw this topic for the first time-I had no idea there were so many Beatles covers! I haven't heard most of these, I tend not to want to hear them. For some reason I've always felt like no one else could ever do a Beatles tune justice. Most that I have heard, I wish had not been done. I guess I have The Beatles on a pedestal they don't need to be on?
I remember my Mom getting a vinyl album of 101 Strings covering Beatles songs, but they were instrumental only, which I could tolerate.
I seem to remember Frank Sinatra covering "Something".
The theme song for the tv show "Providence" was "In My Life", performed by Chantal Kreviazuk. I did love that cover and tried to find it at one time, but the Providence soundtrack has Shawn Colvin singing it.
I saw U2 do a bit of Dear Prudence, not the whole song, and that was a pleasant surprise.
I think the first cover I remember hearing was the Joe Cocker cover of "Little Help From my Friends" I thought it was dispicable then and still do, I think he has the worst voice ever and I know I'm in the minority, but he just reminds me of someone with laringytis that's drunk and singing.
I found this website that shows how many have actually been done, released or not, and it's crazy.
