Where's Bobo ?
Who'd be a Zimbabwean Bobo ? ;D
Matthew Hayden (a Queensland boy) set a new Test Cricket Record for the highest score in Test Match history against them in Perth today - 380 runs :D :D :D
Australia scored 6/735 declared in the process :)

Surprisingly, the Argies didn't play their normal brand of Rugby (stamping on heads, gouging eyes etc...) ??? ??? ??? ;D
Subject: Re: The Worthless Sport Thread is back
I knew you'd be doing this sometime.
Hard luck to thems Zimbabweans. Great news for Australians and Hayden.
In other news, some people danced around on TV today to celebrate the beginning of the rugby world cup.
May the sporting begin.

Thanks FB. Great news for sport worldwide. Not such great news for a certain Mr. Lara.
But will anyone ever get close to his 501 first-class best? I doubt it.

I saw some rugby matches when ABC's Wide World of Sports aired some a while back. I had never even heard of the town of Widnes until then. They must be the Green Bay Packers of England.
Is there any difference between Aussie rugby and English rugby?
Subject: Re: The Worthless Sport Thread is back
Aussie rugby is much better...

It's probably better than American football, too. But I'll wait until I see an Aussie game before I know for sure. ;)

Hey Indy !
If you saw Widnes playing, in all likelihood you were watching Rugby League.
There are two types of Rugby, "League" and "Union".
I am not saying that Widnes DON'T have a Rugby Union team, but they are much better kinown for their Rugby League side.
It gets a bit confusing - on the face of it the two games are the same but there are some significant differences.
Union is played with 15 players, League 13 per side.
League is much more stop/start, whereas Union actively promotes itself (at least in Australia) as 'the running game'.
Also, if someone referes simply to "Rugby", tradition suggests they are referring to Rugby Union, rather than league.
It is Rugby Union that is currently being played as a World Cup Tournament in Australia at present (refer my posts above).
Hope some of that has made it all clear as mud :P :P :P

Well I've just come back from playing a game of football... was subbed 75 minutes through the game, but it sure was a good game for me considering I haven't been playing for prolonged periods...
Pretty happy with how it went, too, so not all is bad.

I'm looking forward to Ireland vs. Australia tomorrow morning (our time) FB. We've got Michael Lynagh here in the UK on the studio panel for the TV coverage. In the build up to this game they showed some old footage of punch ups between Ireland and Australia in 1990 and 1999. The first one involved about 20 players in a melee and the host said "...and I think we can see you involved here, Michael", at which point they freeze framed it and circled Michael wandering past about 20 yards away from the action with a quizzical look on his face!
Don't get me wrong, he's a gentleman of the game and an all time great, it was just so funny to see that look on his face.

As Zella is a sporting infidel, she saw fit to create a similar thread for sport !

Who's been following the Rugby World Cup? I can't wait for the England-Wales match this Sunday. It should be interesting
Subject: Re: The Worthless Sport Thread is back
I have ! It should be a great mtach ! Played in Brisbane, my home town ! :)
Tonight, Australia took forever to vercome Scotland 33 - 16.
Our prize is to have to play New Zealand in the Semi, sigh..... :(

Ooh. Next year, my birthday is on a Sunday. That's not very relevant, but I have learnt that on the 21st there's going to be a Grand Prix. Wicked.

Ball State had a pretty mean rugby team while I was there. They use to use our dorm's showers because it was the closest from the rugby field. Needless to say the residents were very upset.

Managed to watch a bit of the match. We had the girls (me and daughter) cheering for England and the boys (hubby and son) cheering for Wales. Though England won Dai is trying to claim a moral victory because they scored more tries than England. ::)

Australia shrugged off it's underdog tag and stuffed it to the All Blacks from NZ in the semi-final tonight ! :D :D :D
They never knew what hit 'em !
This means we will play either England or France in the Final.
In one way I hope it's England, so Bobo and I can have a little argument about it ! ;D
In another way everyone here (including NZ) hope it's France and we flog them, as part revenge for them spending the last 3 decades in the South Pacific with their nice little nuclear bombs..... >:(
Idiots.
Subject: Re: The Worthless Sport Thread is back
Yep Fuss - who would have thought it! Everybody was tipping the All Blacks to win. PT is a very happy man tonight!!

I'm glad Australia did get through, I thought from what I saw that they deserved it.

Indy,
The one main criticism or Rugby Union is that it is to easy to score points by kicking goals, thereby missing the main aim of the game, which is to score tries (your equivalent = touchdown) - i.e. - get the ball over the opponent's line.
The school of thought is that England rely too much on Wilkinson's kicking.
My specific comments were only based on the fact that he kicked a goal 23 seconds from the end of extra time to lose the World Cup for Australia. :'( :'( :'(
So basically, it was sour grapes ! :D
Subject: Re: The Worthless Sport Thread is back
I hardly saw any of the match. I took daughter to swimming lesson so my (Welsh) husband could watch the match. He took daughter to her dancing lessons so I could watch the end of the match. Son decided to be hysterical if I switched the t.v. on so I managed to catch a snippet saying that it had gone to extra time and that was it ::)
I agree with FBVP about Wilkinson. The papers here have been raving about him but I don't think he is the greatest outside half ever like some of them are saying. He certainly only seems to have one skill.
I guess I didn't watch much rugby in the seventies but many people rate the best outside half as Barry John. (Cue Max Boyce sketch about the outside half factory!)

To celebrate the fact that snooker was finally on the TV again, I played snooker this morning against a friend of mine and scored... wait for it... a break of... one hundred... and... forty... six. Waaaah! >cry<

I kept playing reds straight from the left hand corner of the table into the bottom right pocket and blacks into the bottom left. While all the time, my brother was going, "When are you goin' to be finished?!"
I had to take a final pink because I was out of position, though. Aw well...

Australia defeats Spain in Davis Cup Final.
Spain take note, unlike a few years ago in Seville, the Australian players were sportsmanlike enough in victory to (a) shake your hands after the match, and (b) not spit on you. >:(
Motto, the saying 'being more humble in victory then defeat' can have some meaning. :)

Do you have a fantasy Rugby league similar to American fanasty football? ???
I might have asked this before, but I have such a bad memory. ::)
Subject: Re: The Worthless Sport Thread is back
I haven't seen a fantasy rugby league but there are several newspapers running fantasy soccer leagues. In the summer on or two run fantasy cricket leagues.
A few years ago in my previous department we ran our own fantasy soccer league. I came second one year, won the following year and totally bombed the last year I did it.
