Barnes Wallace
Subject: Re: Famous people the Americans have never heard o
Built a famous bomb during WWII. Depicted in the Film "The Dambusters". The bomb rotated and hence bounced across water, it then sank and retained contact with the dam wall.
The weapon itself performed reasonably well against the Moehne and Eder dams (breaching them both after a number of attempts) but the mission as a whole was of debatable strategic success.
William Joyce ("Lord Haw Haw")
Subject: Re: Famous people the Americans have never heard o
Reminds me of an Irish joke: Irishman asks the foreman at a building site whether there's any jobs going. The foreman thinks he'll give the chap a test to see whether he knows anything about the building trade, so he asks: "What's the difference between a joist and a girder?" The Irishman thinks for a minute, then says (and this works best if you can read it in an Irish accent): "Girder wrote Faust, and Joist wrote Ulysses".... but that was James Joyce, rather than William (who I must admit I don't know)

I recognised the name William Joyce but Lord Haw-Haw gives it away.
He was born in American but his family moved to Ireland and then to England. He joined the British Union of Fascists in the 1930's and became one of their top men. He later left to form his own 'Socialist' group.
During the Second World War he moved to Germany and began broadcasts from there (which always started Germany calling, Germany calling) to broadcast Nazi propaganda into British homes.
He was tried at Nuremberg and subsequently hanged for treason.

Subject: Re: Famous people the Americans have never heard o
I think it read that he had a British passport until mid 1940. The dates he was supposed to have committed treason were carefully selected so as to only talk about the time he had a British passport.
So that makes it o.k. ;)

Australian Prime Minister (1972 - 1975) - famously outed due to the treachery and collusion between the leader of the Liberal Party (Malcolm Fraser) and the ineptitude of the Queen's representative (the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr).
Remembered for his sweeping reforms (which history shows were too many, too soon for the public's comfort) and his speech on the steps of Parliament House upon hearing of his dismissal :
"Well may we say 'God Save The Queen', because nothing will save the Governor-General"
Also noted as a highly intelligent and quick-witted man.
