The only way you could get this wrong is if you "take" 1000 and make then add 40 to -1000. The result would then be 2100. Otherwise, I don't see how the answer could be something other than 4100. It's all addition, right? So add up all the 1000s and then add up the little numbers and then add both results. I recall this from grade-school and I still remember the trick to such additions :P
