I need some help. In my novel, two of my male characters will be getting Jherri curled hair. The thing of it is, though my mom had a curl for years and I live hugging MJ's ankles, I have NO IDEA what goes into the Jherri Curl process.
Can someone please explain to me what exactly is done to the hair, please?

It takes hours...  there's lots of chemicals...like getting your hair relaxed...then you get your hair curled (REALLY  TIGHT) in rollers and sit under the dryer for a long time.. then they take out the rollers juice the hair and then you are good to go...

I know it would take. 4-6 hrs (or seemed like it lol)

It would generally take me 6-8 because I was young they always made me wait while they took adult after adult. I had to wait when I got there - even tho I had an appointment, I had to wait at the sink (before and after the wash) I had to wait under the dryer (after it was off) and I had to wait in the chair before and after they took the rollers out.

I remember how my scalp tingled after they took the rollers out (because they were so damn tight) and I remember feeling my ("silky"hair) before they loaded it down with a gallon of juice. You've seen Coming to America - there's some truth to those soul glow jokes. All my shirts has a ring around the color because of the shyt (curl activator) I'd put in my hair. I never wrapped my hair because no one ever told me to but I slept with a towel over my pillow because the stain was disgusting.

Seriously- I loved the look but hated the consequences.

stoney Jackson wa kinda a big deal in the 80s I'm surprised you and your 80s affection never heard of him.
He seemed to show up in almost everything I watched.

He managed to show up in the "Beat It" video. (I watched it four times and I THINK he's standing off to the side as the black gang leader jumps off the forklift. His hair looks similar.)There was a note about that on IMDB. But I'm interested in looking to see what else I can see him in. And my 80s passion is an ever-evolving and growing thing.  ;D
