$2 is the basic fare that gets you thru the turnstile.  Once you're on the other side of the turnstile, you can stay on indefinitely.

Seniors and people with certain disabilities pay half fare.

There are no more tokens.  I think they got rid of them for good in 2000 or so.  You have to buy a Metro-Card.  For $4, you can buy a FunPass card that lets you get on and off unlimited times for 24 hours.  You can get unlimited ride cards for a week or a month that depending on how often you ride can be a significant discount for you.  When I didn't have a car I used to use that -- now I just refill my card, since I rarely take the train on weekends.  When you do it on a refill basis, you get 2 free rides for every $20 you put on the card.

My job and many other companies have TransitChek, for which I've procrastinated signing up.  My co. gives you the first $30 toward a monthly unlimited card, and the rest gets taken out of your pay pretax.  I'm like, totally wasting money by not signing up...

Well, then you have the problem of traffic.  Plus it's not that easy to get into the city by bus from some places.  Where I live there's an express bus, but it costs more than the std fare -- I think $4 or 4.50.

Cannot find the precise area covered but the distant of each line is are as follows;

LINE LENGTH km (miles)
Bakerloo Line  22.5km (14m)
Central Line  83.2km (52m)
Circle Line  20.8km (13m)
District Line  64km (40m) 60
East London Line  7km (4.4m)
Hammersmith & City Line  26.4km (16.5m)
Jubilee Line  38.4km (24m)
Metropolitan Line  66.4km (41.5m)
Northern Line  57.6km (36m)
Piccadilly Line  70.4km (44m)
Victoria Line  22.4km (14m)
Waterloo & City Line  2.4km (1.5m)
Total route length 414km (258m)

Here's what I've found on the 4 boroughs of NYC covered by the subway:

Manhattan: 22.96 square miles (59.47  km²)
Brooklyn: 96.9 sq mi (251.0 km² )
Bronx: 57.4 sq mi (148.7 km² )
Queens: 178.3 sq mi 461.7 km² (461.7 km² )

Total length of subway lines: 656 mi (1056 km) revenue-generating and 842 mi (1355 km) (total)

A bit bigger than yours, Phil, which I expected.  We have 26 lines and 468 stations.  On a typical weekday, about 5 million people ride.

My commute from Bay Ridge Brooklyn to Midtown Manhattan is about an hour if I transfer from the local to the express, over an hour if I stay on the local.  I'm definitely not close.

No, I don't live in Arizona.. that's some Megadeth trivia. When Megadeth first put up a website (one of the first bands to do so) Dave Mustaine had recently moved to Phoenix.. which sort of led to the "Where the hell is Megadeth; Arizona?" also the album cover for Hidden treasures features numerous Arizona towns on a map with several Megadeth song titles on the same cover as part of the map.. still with me? - Good, I live in St. Louis right now.. I hate the surrounding states (actually Illinois is great but not southern Illinois) but St. Louis is a nice bastion of civilisation in the great expanse of nothingness that is the Mid-West.

Bloody Lip, Yes. But the slider would be eaten. Never used the R, to my knowledge, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C & E.

You mean ACed?  They have air conditioning, yes.  Sometimes there'll be a car in which it's not working.

Fair point, but I think Greneey suffers from the made up disease of epi-leprosy.. and if somebody shone a strobe light at her, she'd have a fit and shake so hard her limbs would fall off.

Perhaps if I splashed her with holy water she'd melt?

In London on the Tube, these announcement inside the trains are pre-recorded, but announcements within the station are still made live over a PA system.

A few of the lines have new trains that have it prerecorded.  The conductor can still override it, tho'.

d.c. used to be more murder-capital-of-the-world-y than it is now, i think it was an 80s, early 90s thing. i guess to go along with the hardcore and go-go scene that used to be big in d.c. (c.f. the gogo posse: “d.c. don’t stand for... dodge city.”) now there’s no scene of any sort here, just lots of coffee shops. heck, i hardly even lock my doors these days.

As far as the wrappers, that's a littering problem.  It'd be nice if Bloomy decided to crack down and ticket litterers.  That's be a huge quality of life improvement.

But when it comes to the smells, sounds, and closeness of other people -- that's where I have to say: look.  You're choosing to live in a major metropolitan area.  There are so many other places to be, with more space and a lower cost of living.  If you're choosing NY or London or DC, then to me, ya gotta accept that certain things come with it.

Speaking of litter, it is the free newspapers that cause the problem here, passengers read them and then leave them on the seats in the carriage.

We have those here as well.  It's not so much of a problem that they're left on the seats, as others often pick them up to read.  However they do cause track fires.

Do you have much in terms of food wrappers and other grossness, or is it mostly just the papers?

I gotta disagree.

Now.. granted, I drive to work, but if I had to use the metro or something, that's where I'd eat my breakfast, instead of sitting there wasting time at home.

Do you have much in terms of food wrappers and other grossness, or is it mostly just the papers?
The only litter seems to be the newspapers

I've never seen this happen in nearly 15 years in NYC, but if I were the spiller, I'd take the person's name and offer to pay for a cleaning.  If I were the spillee, I'd hope that the spiller did the same, but who knows.  Some people on the subway are really rude.

MTA should have separate trains for people who want to eat or drink on them. That way trains could be much more cleaner.

Naww...I think that'd be a lot of money spent on something that couldn't really be enforced.  People would just eat and drink on the no-eating cars anyway.

Actually I found the cabs quite reasonable if you were staying in Manhattan and just going up or downtown.  The buses are crowded and their schedules confusing, the trains can be the same, so once in a while we would hop in a cab when we were just too tired and wanted to get where we were going.

Wow...I've never heard of that happening!  It brings up an interesting point, though.  Rooms have stated capacities, and so do elevators.  A driver can be ticketed if he's carrying too many passengers for the vehicle.  However, I have never heard of a limit when it comes to the subway.  I think Metro-North and LIRR have a max, but I'm not sure abt that either.  Howard, do you know if buses have?

The primary reason I rarely take cabs is that I can usually walk or take the train wherever I'm going and get there more quickly.

They would always be able to move, but it may not be a safe situation for those inside.  One day when a train is stuck, It will be overcrowded, the air conditioning will go out and people will start suffocating.  It could happen.

Buses always have a limit, but it's rarely followed.. it's simply a case of crush people on until there is quite literally no room whatsoever.

Barrooms

Best thing I ever ever saw in a bar.. was me and my mate Freer walked in to the Bakers Arms for a pint one afternoon after work. It usually was pretty busy.. especially because it was a small place (second oldest pub in the world, built in the 1400's) but that afternoon it was jammed.

Freer pipes up - "WILL YOU GET THE F**K OUT OF MY WAY, I WANT A DRINK!" Now.. if a normal person said that he'd be told to jog on.. of course, Freer was a 6'7 300lb Scotsman with a bad attitude, a red face and a head the size of a boulder.. it was like the red sea parting.  ;D

The Ipods are the worst.  Back when it was just Walkmen, I don't remember anyone ever having them up so loud that it actually disturbed others.  Now I hear other people's music blaring every single DAY.

I wouldn't find it at all pleasant to listen to headphones at such loud volumes.  If other people can hear your headphones loud and clear, then what you're hearing has got to sound awfully distorted.

Do you play the guessing and try and recognise the music that is being listened to?

You play the guessing game with yourself, not involving anyone else.

Yes, that IS  a recent pic of me (from about the last 5 days) ... although rather grainy ... perhaps hiding the odd wrinkle.

I was thinking of posting more .. for your benefit .. but maybe I should quit while I'm ahead!  :D ;D :D

P.S. I've since added an attachment of that pic, which if you click on, should get larger. Now you can see my long locks!  ;D

You look smashin', Alan.  :)  And your sig picture reminded me the guy's name who you resemble -- John Lodge.

You may kiss the bride!  ;D

MTA doesn't do that.I wish it did.

I think it's a terrific idea, but I think the MTA needs to put more of an effort into cleaning the trains and stations before adding something like that.

Hmm ... I'm tempted to 'Karamel' you .. but notice you're on 69! Sadly, I was not the one to place you on that number ...  :\'(

Anyhow ... I don't know if you'll forgive me if I take you away from it? Perhaps you want to enjoy the moment a little longer?  ??? :-\\ :D
