Tyler is about a hundred miles southeast of Dallas, the northeastern part of Texas.
The Rose Festival and Rose parade both go on in Tyler, Texas which is considered the Rose capital of the world. Infact its nickname is the "Rose City". Over half the roses sold commercially in the U.S. are packaged and shipped from Tyler, and about 1/4 are actually grown here. We also have the nation's largest municipal rose garden I believe.
Is Tlyer, Texas the birthplace of Alex (The Dude)?
Nope. I was born in Medical City Hospital in Dallas, Texas. I'm originally from East Dallas(a neighborhood called Casa View).

I googled Tyler and it seems quite a nice place, not rusty, dusty cowpokey. The bit about the roses is nice.
Any good historical sights?

I'm not sure, really.
We are kind of famous for having some brick streets, which is a historical thing in a way.
A thing a lot of outsiders don't realise about Texas: About half the state isn't "rusty, dusty cowpokey". Eastern Texas is lush and green, not desertous, or praire. Tyler is in an area known as the Piney woods, lots of deciduous forrests and its very hilly and green. We get plenty of rain. This region has much more in common with Louisiana, Arkansas or even Mississippi than it does West Texas. Southeast Texas is green however its coastal plains, less trees and less hilly. It also gets more rain and is more humid. In many ways Southeast Texas(Houston area and directly east of it towards Louisiana) is like Louisiana, in it's climate(humid, lots of bayous and marsh type areas) and culture(theres a definite seafood/water-oriented part of the culture thats not as strong up here in Northeast texas, and a Cajun influence is felt, especially east of Houston).

Hey Dude ~ I used to visit Tyler quite frequently when I lived in Nacogdoches.
Two questions for ya:
* Is it still dry there (i.e. can't purchase alcohol)?
* Do they still have that kick arse zoo?

Yes, Smith County is still dry unfortunately. Its weird, the majority of the population drinks, yet the place stays dry. I think its because of Greenacres Baptist Church, they hold a LOT of clout around here. Eh, its the bible belt.
The Caldwell Zoo is still open, and even better now. Its been improved and expanded, they even have Penguins. 8)
Unfortunately its no longer free though, but its not too expensive.

Is It considered The Lone Star state?
Yes indeed, thats it's nickname, because our state flag has the one star on it:

In a couple of months I'll no longer be here in Texas though. This will be my state flag:

I guess I'll have to start a thread called "Ask me anything about Miami/South Florida"
