Subject: Ask me anything about something I know nothing about ...

like civility!
Thought i'd try this thread again, only this time without the spiraling down into the black hole vortex of recrimination and rage that characterized the first outing.
What's it like to skydive?
How does one cope with the fast pace and excitement of being an international spy?
What's the best way to optimize your stock portfolio?
Go ahead and ask me. I'm sure I don't know.

i read somewhere scientists now believe the universe is expanding at such a rate that it's not going to contract again. (you might know the old theory was that the universe would expand for a while, then gravity would cause it to contract back to the primordial atom again, and then there would be another big bang, ad infinitum?) so basically everything's just going to expand until it's all so spread out it'll all go dark. you know, in about a trillion gazillion years or so. i find this fact unduly discouraging.
i know, i know. brooklyn is not expanding.

What's the point of the letter "C"?
Couldn't we just use "S" and "K"?
Why not just make a letter for the "Ch" sound instead of a "C" which is there for three sounds?
or why not use "C" instead of "S" and "K"?

because if we start getting rid of letters -- next thing we'd toss W too cuz the romans just used V for everything, and by the time we're done we'll only have like six letters to do everything with. and that would suck.
or, rather, that would cucc.

get this: there's four! escape to witch mountain (1975), return from witch mountain (1978), beyond witch mountain (1982), and escape to witch mountain (1995). i haven't been able to get my hands on the 95 one, i just watched the 82 one a couple days ago and it's DREADFUL! DREADFUL! although tracey gold does a passable tia. the poor bastard they got playing tony was way out of his depth, and without ray milland or christopher lee villaining it up you got nothin'. nothin'!
i can't choose from the two john hough movies. they're both princely. escape is probably technically a better movie, it's got the harmonica and that fairy tale feel, but return just has such glorious kitch, with the red pantsuit and bette davis doing whatever the hell it is she's doing, and christopher lee man! i dunno, you really just can't have one without the other.

I saw the '95 one, on Disney Cable.
Robert Vaughn does quite a good turn for the villain.
The main hook here, is Vincent Schiavelli "hosting" a trip for twins. The key- get to Witch Mountain!
Look for Brad Dourif in a dual role, as ahomeless retarded man, and as Luther, the limo driver.

they're more preteen. beyond witch mountain totally ignored return from witch mountain and acted like a sequel to escape to witch mountain. tony played the harmonica to make stuff move (hence the line, "put that magic flute back in your pocket and don't get it out again!"), when by return he'd outgrown that.
