Subject: Ask Me Anything About Carolina Circle Mall

Written By: Roadgeek on 04/28/06 at 9:54 pm

There used to be a mall here in Greensboro called Carolina Circle Mall. I'm an expert on this mall so ask me anything about it.

This is also my first time in this forum so if I'm doing this wrong, sorry.

1. The mall started going down hill around the late '90s and it closed in 2002.
2. It was a small-medium regional mall.
3. It was demolished in the summer of 2005 and a Wal-Mart is being built there now that's projected to open this June.

I too am an aficionado of defunct places....we had a similar mall (Greengate Mall) in Pennsylvania...it was smaller and quaint...but it closed down and yep you guessed it....there is now a Walmart there. :-\\

Another mall-junkie here...

When was it built? And more important, do you have any early pics (preferably) colour, of the mall? I'm talking pre-1975...

The mall opened in 1976. Yes I do have some pictures of opening day. I'll post them probably tomorrow.

Just as I promised. Here are some pictures of the mall on Opening Day 8/4/1976. If you want, you can check out my other Carolina Circle albums.

Sadly, I was born after they got rid of it. But they replaced it with a carousel so it was all cool.

Awesome pics, roadgeek.

The style of the mall is a bit modern for my tastes...you can already see that there was a quantum shift in Mall architecture from the early to mid-70s. Malls built pre-early 70s have a very different look to malls build after this period, such as Carolina Circle Mall, and malls such as Metro Mall in Phoenix and the Cumberland Mall in Atlanta, I forget the name. So in my book, Carolina Circle isn't a 'true' retro mall, like Cinderella City Mall in Colorado, Cherry Hill in New Jersey, Northland Mall in Dallas, Dixie Square, Illinois.etc

Did the mall have a video arcade? If it did, was it a big arcade, and what kind of games did it have?

Yes it did. It was called Electronics America. It was located at the food court near the ice rink/carousel. I don't really remember what it had.
