Could you tell me what the name of the area is that has the Greyhound Bus Station in it?
We got dropped off there one time and had to walk about 3 miles before we reached the centre of Washington DC - It seemed quite a run dwon area compared to the rest of town.

Is this part of the new WWii thing downtown on the mall? You know I haven't even seen that yet?

I hate they cluttered up the mall with that thing. but for presidential memorials I just know the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials. I don't really sightsee much, I haven't even been up the Washington monument!

Hmm, I actually believe this is located near the Potomac river. I mean VERY close to it, lol. It's an outdoor thing, as most of the other presidential memorials are. I have always wanted to see it as I have had an affinity to FDR for awhile now.

Tell me about the different neighborhoods and suburban regions.

When I was there awhile ago I went through the WWII memorial while it was being built at night, it spooked me out and I thought somebody would jump out of the bushes and kill me.

I was going to be in DC this week, but Jake got a stomach flu and we had to cancel.  We had
planned to stay at the Holiday Inn/Rosslyn in Arlington.  Is that as close as they want you to
believe?  Is it a descent area?  When we plan the trip again I figure that we will probably book
there, but it would be nice to know if it was a slimy place-or not.

I like rosslyn a lot. it's a very nice part of NoVA. Visit the spectrum theater, the newseum and some of the clubs in Arlington -- galaxy hut, whitlow's on wilson, bardo.

Also there's a very handy shuttle line from rosslyn over the bridge into Georgetown.

I actually live in northern Virginia, town called falls church about ten miles west of d.c.

http://www.ci.falls-church.va.us/

I read somewhere that falls church has the highest per capita public infrastructure spending of any city in the nation. It has a very nice library. And there's hardly any crime. I'm told a lot of CIA employees live and work here, but I can neither confirm nor deny this.

I have lots of friends in the People's Republic of Takoma Park. And I lived in Silver Spring for like ten years. You should see it now. it used to be all cool and run-down -- I loved it! -- but now it's all refurbished and re-designed, and it looks just like everyplace else.

You have to realize I actually appreciate a touch of urban blight. Reminds you humans live there.

Yeah must admit it's been our experience of that, we got dropped off in I think, Indianapolis, I'm not sure but it was about 3am and we had to walk past quite a few dodgy areas before we could find a place to stay (as this was one of the stoppoffs we hadn't booked accomodation prior)  so we were scuttling about trying to find somewhere to kip, I remember we were totally zonked aswell at the time.   :D

How strange.. I was just within miles of Falls Church about 3 years ago. My then-boyfriend had a friend who lived there who's a pianist and he was going to take me to visit him but somehow the plans fell through.  :(

Visit Newark in late April, when the cherry blossoms are at their peak in Branch Brook Park. We have the second-most cherry blossoms after DC, and we also have the Edison Historic site and great Portuguese food.

Tia. Seriously? You haven't taken the lift to the top of that monument? - you should go up there man the views are just brilliant.

Question: Who was the town planner?  I just love the way all the monuments are in such a neat line, like the Monument, then Capitol Hill and umm now what is that other huge monument that forms the 3 notable historic buildings?

yeah, we're replete with civil war stuff and every highway aout here is named after some southern general, which i find a little disconcerting. i was chilling next to a tree near the local library a few months ago and suddenly see this historical plaque at the base of it -- "so and so union officers were hanged off the limbs of this very tree!" i'm like, yeah, okay, great. thanks for ruining this perfectly nice tree with your morbidass plaque.

I read somewhere Washingtonians are notorious among new Yorkers for being rude. Did I mention that already?

I tell you the kind of character I've met a lot of - - people who are real power fetishists and are always making asses out of themselves dropping big names. This one choad we all had to suffer through at a party was all, yes, well, at a recent seminar we had a few areas of focus we winged by president Boutros-boutros gali regarding relief plans for the wartorn nation of imageekistan. I'm like, chump, you shined his shoes once at union station, I bet. And sometimes on the metro you see kids in suits and ties, couldn't be a lick over 20, all talking about "the senator's stand on such and so." And I'm thinking, bitch! You bus dishes in the congessional lunchroom and you know it.

So that happens a lot, boocoo poseurism. But since I wouldn't really be that impressed even if they were telling the truth I don't really care if they fake it. whatever.

People always talk about, oh, in Austin or in san fran or wherever everybody's so much friendlier but I've been here for 25 years so I really have nothing to compare it to. Rather sad really. but I can tell you once you get out of the city limits everything's normal. Like my open mic joint, they just play bluegrass songs and eat cheeseburgers like any other normal American.

I would say in east coast rudeness, top to bottom...

1. Washington D.C
2. NYC (close second)

5. Jersey

REALLY?!
I have never been treated badly by any New Yorker.
When i really think about it.
It might be a demeanor that outsiders interpret as rude, but i think that Tia and the cool jersey girl
would know better than someone from, say, mid-Iowa.
Now, I don't find Jersians rude either, but we share a border and an understanding.

Where in those states? Sorry...I'm curious. I think people who move alot grow up moving alot, and have parents who moved alot. Like my friend Allison lived in like three different places before here, and her parents each moved 10+ times growing up.

New Yorkers strike me as weird, cold, and snooty compared to Jersey people. Or just tough, but warm, like us Jerseyans. Manhattanites is really what I mean...

I agree.

Having grown up in NY and living there until I was 20 (and visiting a few times every year) I can say that New Yorkers aren't rude (well some are but that's just the person, just like you can find rude people no matter where you go), rather I think the pace is much different than say South West Va. I mean you're from Jersey and you say Manhattanites are rude.

I grew up on Staten Island and I've been to Manhattan many, many, many times, I even worked in Manhattan for a short while, and I'm telling you my thoughts about whether or not they're rude.  We're not judging whether or not I'm rude, are we?

i love arlington! arlington and alexandria are the best towns in NoVA. alexandria is a little more highbrow though.

yeah, both are part of the original boundaries of DC, they got annexed into virginia way back in the day, i forget the details of that. DC was originally broken up into four equal quadrants but now the Southwest quadrant is like six blocks because it basically got given away to virginia.

the parts i mean are west of the quadrant -- FC, fairfax, herndon, etc., along the 66/267 corridor, which is like the new high-tech corridor, one of the richest areas in the nation -- and the 95 corridor to the south, springfield, etc., which is sorta, um, "red-state" hillbilly. (sorry!) both are pretty republican for separate reasons. (rich corporate constituency to the west, NRA gun club constituency to the south.)

sorry to lapse into partisanship.

interesting fact -- the "mixing bowl", an enormous cloverleaf where the beltway meets 95 south, is the largest public works project of all time, at least i'm pretty sure. bigger than the hoover dam, all that stuff. it's in springfield, i used to live there. it was weird because for a while when they were building it,  i was literally having to take a different set of highways to work every week because it was changing so fast.

several construction workers died to make it. just like hoover dam. falling off overpasses, etc., there was a story in the metro section every month or so about it for a while. just like the hoover dam, there's rumors people fell into the cement mixers and their bodies actually ended up being part of the overpasses.

Washington D.C. is a NE city, but is unique in that nobody is "from" Washington D.C. and its suburbs. It's full of transplants and immigrants. Every other Northeastern city has a large, stable core of people descended from immigrants who stay in the city and suburbs and probably, for the most part, always will.
