Did anyone play this smash hit when it first came out in Dec '93, or early in '94? Do you remember the craze surrounding it in the mid '90s?

Based on moral codes (and being one of the first games to receive an "M" rating for its later releases), being only eight-nine years old at the time meant that it was WAY too violent for my tastes at that age. I do remember it being popular, seeing it in gaming magazines, and seeing that the first-person shooter is the latest innovator in gaming, something that still has an important influence today. It felt like the end of the innoence that characterized the '80s/early '90s "family friendly" era of gaming. Basically if you rated every game that came out prior to Doom, they would probably get a "T" rating at worst, and the vast majority (Beat 'em ups were perhaps the most violent genre prior to Doom and Street Fighter/Mortal Combat) with just receive E or E10 ratings.
