My hosting provider just made some very stupid changes this morning, and I'm still trying to figure out what might be broken. 

I'm not real happy at the moment.  This company is somehow managing to be worse than the last one, which is a pretty good trick on their part.

  Don't know if it's just me, but images such as avatars, smileys, ranking stars and other graphics are not showing up.  Just placeholders...

probably your browser cache

there was a server change, but it's only a file permissions problem.  If it was causing issues, everyone would see it.

I keep trying to explain this problem to the people who support the server, but they keep telling me it's not happening for them, and to provide proof...

usually that kind of thing only happens if the server is under a heavy load, which it isn't lately.  Definitely something to keep an eye out for, thanks for letting me know.

I happened to be watching it this time when it happened, and it wasn't me.  It looks like a spammer trying to hit the site or something.  Lots of exim processes being fired and overwhelming the site briefly.  Maybe the hosting company can shed some light on it.

the hosting company is monitoring now and running some virus scanners to be safe (I think, the way the crazy ticket system works, I can't see their response until I get home).

if you see it again, let me know the precise time (and your time zone if you can't convert it to Eastern Standard Daylight Savings Time).  I've got additional logging turned on, and want to see if it appears again.  One of the domains appears to be getting a lot of spam sent to non-existent accounts at the moment.

I haven't seen that again, but I haven't checked the other high load instances you've been noticing against the mail logger to see if there is a correlation yet.

I still have trouble logging in. This has been going on since before all the stuff with the old server. The first time it always says, wrong username or password, or something to that effect, then the second time it always works. I know I'm not typing in my info wrong everytime I log in. Anyone else have this happen?

parody update... it's based on the entire server load, and it appears when any of the once a day scripts run, it lets the process run 100%, not limited to some extent.  So it throws the CPU load averages out of whack for a few minutes.  I think I'll disable the CPU load monitoring for now, since it appears to trip too easily.

the problem is that the hosting provider needs to see it when it's happening, and the window when it does is so short I can't get them to see it in time.

I was too... my connection at work was awful all this week (I've been helping overload it trying to download countless pieces of software to install), so at first I thought it was me.  I checked the server stats and it showed really light load on the server, so I assumed that was the case.  Then I hit other sites and realized it wasn't.  No idea if the company will announce any reason for the slow down, might have been a brief DOS attack or something.

According to the hosting company, the best they can determine is someone partially destroyed a couple of the fiber lines they use for their primary network traffic.  From the sounds of it the timing couldn't be worse, since it occurred on a Friday afternoon a lot of people at the hosting providers upstream network went home for the weekend before it was totally resolved.  I'm still seeing some spotty traffic issues, but not too bad.  Guess the weekend might see some hiccups from time to time.

Annoying, but hardly anything I can worry about (way out of my control).  A little annoying, since I might have some time this weekend to work on a new section on amIright I'm thinking of spinning off into it's own site if people like it.
