Basically, once you log in, the ads won't be displayed.
Why do this? Regular site visitors aren't the people who would click on the ads. The ads are really only going to work for people who are hitting the site from a search engine result. It's not as easy to determine whether or not someone is just lurking or has hit the site from a search result, hence the reason it shows up when you're not logged in.
So if you like to lurk, don't complain about the ads, just log in. If you don't want people to know when you're here, you can change it in your profile.

I didn't even know there were ads here
there was a "link unit" style ad, it was directly above the home/help/search links... not very effective on this site
