Subject: Another chatroom

http://inthe00s.com/chatty/

works with MODERN browsers such as Firefox.  Internet Explorer 6 works, not sure about older versions.

Ironically I never tried the other one out, but I decided to give this one a try. Works great - I'll probably visit it whenever I'm on here and have some spare time. :)

Oh, and the guy talking to himself - that was me. ;D

Might I offer a suggestion? I don't know if it's possible to do this, but it would be helpful if perhaps there was some kind of alert tone (like in AIM, for example) whenever someone posted in the chat room. Just thought I'd put in my two cents.  :)

I think it would be more useful if people just announced when they might be in there... like Monday afternoon 1-2PM EST, or something like that.

Good idea. As of right now, I can't really go online for long periods of the time during the day, so I'll frequently be there from, say 1-4 AM and maybe as late as 9AM California time.

On that note, I'll be home from work around 1:30 am so I'll check it out around then.

Thanks for setting it up, BTW. :)

chucky is there anyway to add a feature that when we go there, we can put our name up, when we leave we take it down? that way we know if anyone else is there. something like a sign in but not needing an account.

BUMP

Can't forget this (although I did until now--shame on me! LOL).

Just wondered, how many people still use the chatroom? I only was in there once but I'm always up for it when I've got time. :)

the new version of the software now works like the messageboard.  There's a userlist (now also appears on inthe00s pages too) that will expire after five minutes of no use

I think use of the Chatroom should be restricted to members only...what a mess Friday night, guest after guest after guest were in the chatroom, the list grew so long, had to leave the forum...it took up almost the whole screen.

:( that people would do that and  >:( too this is the best forum around

It's a bug.

i think that might be a bug, actually?

I think there may be a bug there now... it says "Wednesday December 31 1969" at the top with a blank area below. I have to click on the "Logs" link to see all the recent posts on there, and it had some peoples_names @intheoos.com entering/leaving the conversation. Perhaps some bug caused that too? ???

It's a bug.  I was in there without cookies enabled, and it stopped as soon as I enabled them for inthe00s.com.

Whoever invented internet cookies is really on my doo-doo list now...

Cookies aren't bad.

They can however be used for tracking you, which some people think is a bad thing.  For instance, an advertising company that has ads on various sites can track which sites you've been to that run their ads.

Instead of disabling cookies, people should run a "clean" utility which wipes out cookies at the end of the day if they're concerned with security.

There are far worse things on the web than cookies.  No one has ever gotten a computer virus because of a cookie or had their machine compromised because of a cookie.  They hype over cookie abuse is WAY over-inflated.

That said.  There is a bug with the chatroom with non-cookie enabled browsers.  I'll have to let the authors of the software know.

Without harping on the 1984 aspects of cookies, I'll just say that I don't want web sites redirecting me to only what THEY want me to see, or giving me the Old Comedywriter markup on sale items, or trying to remind me that I need to buy that casket now because soon it'll be too late.

At least I know that "inthe00s" cookies won't give me pop-up ads for Geritol or Depends...although some of those Amiright Google ads can be kinda spooky sometimes...

well, the google ads are triggered by keywords on the page they appear on.  To my knowledge they don't use cookie tracking for their ads unlike most of the other ad companies.

popups?  get Firefox and adblock.  I think I've seen five popups in the past year, and they were all when I had to resort to using IE because some dork required it on their site.

Hey Chucky, is there any way to make it so that when people log into the chatroom, it automatically uses their inthe00s screen name?  Seems lately alot of guests go in there, and pretend to be other users.  I never know who is who anymore when I go in there

I know there are several members who would like to use the chatroom..but they are apprehensive because they don't want this to happen to them...or they are sick of going in there and having the entire thing filled with nonsense from guests.

I'll have to research it.  Unless someone has already written an interface for it, I'll have to do it from scratch, which might take awhile.

I wasn't even aware people were using it, I never see anyone in there.

Sometimes there's nobody in there at all (except a few "guests"), but other times it's very lively, like right now.

The sad thing about it is that those guests are probably regular users... they seem to know a bit about people here.

I agree totally. Right now there are a bunch of people posting a bunch of nonsense. Nothing but periods in each comment. ::)
