Subject: Sorry lurkers, too much nonsense..
There's been an influx of nonsense from lurkers and "guest" posters, who have been annoying members. I have disabled anonymous posting by "guest" users as a result. I knew once the site got big enough we'd end up having to enforce this, I didn't want to do it, since it generally results in more work fielding questions about why logins aren't working, or passwords are lost, etc.
I hate to do this, because it discourages visitors with little computer experience. There's a pack of trolls acting like children that have infested the board lately, so it has to be done.
I also recommend writing your password somewhere safe, since I will no longer be changing them for people when they are lost, as a result of this new change.

:(That is a shame, since I myself was a guest until I got the hang of registering;I'm not exactly a computer whiz--if I was,I'd post pictures and do all kinds of neat things here.It won't be much fun for people who are less adept at a computer than I am.Oh well, maybe you;ll be able to lighten up in the future.Good luck!Cheers! :)

With over 2300 members as of my posting this, I knew that requiring registration to post would only be a matter of time.
A couple of other boards I go to allow any- and everyone to read, but only registered users may post. It does cut down on a lot of nonsense.
Although I'm glad this move waited until after the "Admirers" thread came up. It gave more than one person the chance to 'sound out' the feelings of other members without causing embarrassment or hurt feelings. :)

unfortunately, I think this software prevents reading without registering..
the Admirer's thread actually is partially to blame for this.. there have been some posts that needed to get deleted that were way out of hand..

I am severly p i s s e d off. I understand fixing the board so that 'lurkers' cannot post, but making it so that one cannot even read the board without being logged in is the height of ridiculousness. I check the board off and on all day, and I do not appreciate having my name showing every single time I do so. I don't always have time to respond to PM's, and if my name is showing and I cannot respond to someone, then I am put in a position where I am made to feel that I am being rude. Other boards at least have a 'hide' feature, so that one can read the board without feeling obligated to respond to someone if they do not have time or are not in the mood to be sociable. This is a privacy issue and I feel it needs to be addressed.

well, I just got some more time to look at the settings, and I found out how to allow reading posts without being logged in.. there's a couple of different ways to set things up, and the option I wanted was at the end of a long screen, whereas the one I chose was at the top...
the problem of course, is that these settings don't get changed very often, and I don't know them all, so it takes time to make any change, and get it right the first time. Its one of the reasons I don't like to modify messageboards once they're up and running, not to mention the impact on users who got used to doing things a certain way.
if the "Who's Logged On" is a major headache, I could always disable it.. I did see that ability while I was in there.. no one should expect you to respond to a private message just because you happen to be logged in. That's just rude in my opinion.

Don't worry about that Chuck. I have been on here enough to know my password by memory. It's the same one as my editing pages. ;)

I should clarify this just a bit, I didn't do this because of one post, or one thread, or one person's reaction. This is a culmination of several requests, a lot of trolls that both Hairspray and myself have had to deal with, etc. Hairspray has asked for this, for about two years, the last two months especially.
Most of those tests that rank where you stand politically, put me as just a shade left of center, which considering I come from Massachusetts, home of the liberal, is remarkable in and of itself. I guess I let my leftist tendicies out, by wanting to believe that a few jerks wouldn't be able to ruin things for everyone, but as we all know, it doesn't take much for a few miscreants to prove annoying.
fun political testing link:
http://www.self-gov.org/quiz.html - according to this one I'm Libertarian.. my former coworker will have a good laugh about that.

Thank you Chucky - if you can fix it so a person can choose to hide thier name, that would be fine. I just pop in and out of the board all day and it would be a lot easier for me.
But I am sure going to miss Ghost, L'Etranger, Meursault etc. etc. etc.... :-/ And damn! Zenobia and Clarinda will have to go into retirement... :'(
Subject: Re: Sorry lurkers, too much nonsense..
I also like the idea of a "hide" or "invisible" mode if it is an option....
If it's not, no big deal. :)
The "invisible" feature does come in handy on YIM, when I am having a serious conversation with someone and I don't want to be interrupted by another.
I don't know what options are available to you, but if this one is, it seems there are two votes for it. :)

:o :o :Don't get me wrong--I think there's a good reason for the change.I actually wonder why some of the 'regular 'lurkers don't register so they get a ranking--they can't do so any other way.I mean, some of these people might be close to being a royal penguin!!!Cheers!

yeah, I checked, but I don't see anything like that.. just a means to show it to admins only, or not show it at all.. its not a bad idea, but I hesitate to take on any new features right now, I've got lots of other projects to work on.. (plus my book project, which isn't progressing as fast as I would hope)...

sure blame it all on Hairspray..its all hairsprays fault ....lol ;)
actully, I dont like this idea at all.....sometimes when Im on a public computer I dont like having to sign into my name on those comps ..I guess I just dont trust them or something.....
But now what happpens to all the ghosts that come in just to ask one question about a misheard lyric or something (like on the misheard lyrics board, where it happens quite a bit)...I think that these people are going to be driven away because of this.....

An excellent point Billy!! I came here originally to ask a simple question about a song title and now I have over 2300 posts! I knew instantly I would love this place and the people...but it was back on the old board...I know I didn't have to register to do it...in fact I don't think there were registered users...
Still, I'd hate to see potential newbies driven away b/c they have to go through rigamarole just to post a simple question.

OMG! What about lang a dang and lost ham! Oh no!
There are so many I will miss! I wonder if some of the ones I mentioned, for which I am responsible for, are partially to be blamed for this...

So what happens when you lose a password or cannot log in? I recall members could post as guest and have the problem addressed, but now there won't be a way of knowing if there was a problem. I guess members should assume they can e-mail Chuck...?

How on Earth does one "lose" a password? I mean, are people picking like random letters & numbers? Why not just pick a word that you can easily remember? Jeez! ::)

it worked Chuck. forced registration.
Subject: Re: Sorry lurkers, too much nonsense..
I agree with registration. If you forget your password just go to the Login section, Enter your Name, and Click on "Forgot Password?" and it is immediately e-mailed to you.
