Subject: Board running slow (STILL!)

Written By: Zella on 01/27/03 at 11:01 p.m.

What is going on? The board has been running so slow all day that it is not even worth trying to post. It is taking anywhere from 40 seconds to 3 minutes to get from one screen to another. I am not having this problem anywhere else on the web. And I've had feedback that at least one other person is experiencing the same problem... Help! >:(

Zella, I'm having the same problem.  I thought it was my ISP, but now it appears that it's this site.  I wonder what's wrong... ???

Other people appear to be posting fine tho'... Maybe it has something to do with the Pacific Ocean... ::)

Hello !

I do not know if it was me that Zella referred to in the original post, but I am have been having this problem for the last 11 hours.....

As I got it at home, then at work, and now back at home again, therefore I am assuming (hopefully) that it was neither PC based, or ISP provider based ?

But if I am displaying a level of technical ignorance, please tell me.

FB  :)

Nope........its happening out here on the "right coast" too. And its not just a US thing (ie Fussy's having the prob too). At first I thought it had something to do with the "worm" thats going around, but its only happening on here for me also.
(Edit) Its getting better though! Its only taking 15-25 seconds to load the page instead of 1-2 minutes. I think (and I'm speaking for myself here) that we may be a little spoiled by how efficiantly Chucky's board has always ran.

Well, whatever it was seems to have corrected itself/been corrected this morning.  :)

Well, it seems to be OK now.  I've had that problem all day yesterday.

yes, my webhost Saturday posted a notice about the worm affecting their network.. the site doesn't have it because I don't run Microsoft software on my server. I like it to stay running for more than two hours without rebooting, so I run Linux. I actually had a bug with creating a new site for a friend, because the site hadn't been reset in over 270 days.

The problem is that this new bug causes infected servers to flood Internet providers with extra traffic, so it doesn't take much to cause things to run slowly. It's certainly better today, and I'm sure in a couple more days things will return to normal. If it doesn't, I'll spend some time checking out the server performance just to be safe.

I tried rebooting the server earlier today to see if it would resolve some of the issues we were having.. turns out I had something installed that shouldn't have been, and it prevented the board from coming back online.. my provider resolved things for me, and it looks like all is back to normal.. sorry about the lack of a site for a few hours there...

As a guest here that comes on occassionally, I too have been noticing how slow the changes from one screen to another has been getting. It had been bought to my attention by a board member but I assumed as how I was also downloading from Kazaa, that this was part of the problem. But now even as I peruse the board as I write this, it is noticeable how slow page changes are. Whoever this Zella woman is , she speaks the truth. :)             Hi zee

It is still running slow for me. And that is with a brand new computer -- it usually switches pages in about a half second, and it sure isn't coming anywhere close to that now... :'(

Same as Zella,  Even with Kazaa off my page changes can still take up to 3-4 minutes. My computer also has been upgraded recently. I can not figure out the go-slow deal...

Is anyone else still having problems with the board running slow?

Up till a week ago I had about a one second changeover between pages. Now it runs anywhere from 6 seconds to one minute! This is not happening anywhere else on the Web! I don't know whether to call a computer tech or what to do. Is it me? Is it the board? Help! Please! This is a brand new computer and I don't know what is wrong.... :'(

It is still a little slow for me....not as bad as it was a few days ago, but a little slow.

Actually today it is running normal (for me and my dial up that is)

Hi Chuck,

Are you updating the boards or Amiright?  Because there are bursts of quick speed and then periods where you can't even access Amiright or the messageboards, it's really peculiar.

Just wondering, thanks.

nope.. probably just heavy server load.. I did a reboot of the server yesterday morning, which seemed to speed things up a bit.. but otherwise things appear to be normal.. I checked the site a couple times around 5 yesterday and didn't notice anything unusual.

and a quick look at the front page of the messagboard, shows that there were 35 people checking out the messageboard (new site record) at around 3 pm.. so I have a feeling it's just getting a little busy around here..

YaBB is supposed to be getting re-written using newer technology, so I might need to upgrade in order to find more speed.. the messageboard doesn't generate any revenue for the sites, so unfortunately, I can't do anything rational, like dedicate a server for it (unless someone wants to spend a $140 a month to support it, which is one of the cheapest deals I could find for hosting a heavy traffic site)..

a software updgrade could help elivate the problem, but I have a feeling it's a temporary solution at best.. the rate at which the board's usage increases, means that it's only a matter of time before something drastic has to be done to either maintain the traffic increases, or decrease the usage of the messageboard.
