Subject: What features would you like?
In the process of looking for help on my email problems with the messageboard, I noticed a lot of cool modifications I can make to the software.
Among those I am considering:
Spell checker - I think a lot of people want this
Embedded Polls - will put up little voting topics and stuff
An option for individual users to disable viewing avatars and signatures, etc. This will let people with slow connections read pages faster. Those of you with fast connections can continue to see the fun stuff.
Add More Smiles - even more obnoxious smilie images
Topic Rating - let people rank wether a topic should be considered important or not
Additional member ranks - special ranks at more levels, ie. you hit 1000 a new rank, you hit 2500, etc.
These all require me to change the code to the system, and take time to implement and test properly. So I'm only willing to make changes if people really want them.

That would be cool, if it's not too much work for you...*puts halo on* ;D -- Junior

These 2 I could do without:
Topic Rating - let people rank wether a topic should be considered important or not
Additional member ranks - special ranks at more levels, ie. you hit 1000 a new rank, you hit 2500, etc.
I find these to be distracting from the true purpose of the boards. That's just my opinion.
Subject: Re: What features would you like?
I agree with Hairspray on this. Topic ratings are usually unused, anyway. More ranks....well, that could lead to more fluff than you want. But I wouldn't mind more smilies. :) And the polling option can be a lot of fun! ;)
Subject: Re: What features would you like?
I agree with Hairspray and BadAngel, topic ratings and member ranking are not necessary.
More obnoxious smilies would be fun, so would polls. ;D
Subject: Re: What features would you like?
I agree with Hairspray, BadAngel, and dagwood. No one (except maybe Bobo or Hairspray) will be reaching 2500 posts soon...and the topic rating is definetely a waste. -- Junior
Subject: Re: What features would you like?
More smilies!!!! A devilish grin would be nice... not that anyone would ever use it.
Subject: Re: What features would you like?
I like the addition of smiley's myself, as well as the spell checker.
Don't we already have a sort of topic rating system? The "burning folder" icons tell me right away which topics are getting a lot of responses, and are therefore, IMO, popular.
I would like to be able to turn off avatars once in a while. Occasionally some nitwit will knock down some phone lines; or even better the squirrels chew on the wires, thereby slowing down my connection from home (or knocking me offline altogether.)
:o
Subject: Re: What features would you like?
ok.. so the stuff people like so far is:
smilies
spell check
polls
turning off fluff for slow connections
I'll try reading up on them to see what is involved..

Penguins are very cunning creatures.. they'll be hard to expunge from the system anytime soon

Chucky
Is there a way, once you have marked a topic as Notify of Replies, that you can un-mark it ?
Aslo I know I'm late with the reply, but agree with the sentiments of most - would not like to see topic rankings as would be too subjective...?
Would like to see imbedded polls.
Subject: Re: What features would you like?
I'd like membership to be a requirement simply to cut down on individual people entering the boards and posting 4 or 5 messages to his or herself in a pathetic attempt to either advertise or start a riot.
Course, I also like the other 4 options listed. :)

Actually I thought of something else I'd like, but it doesn't pertain to the message boards. When the boards were down I spent a bit more time roaming through other parts of the site and jumped to the "Worst Movies", "Quotes" etc sections. While I was there I noticed people giving bad reviews for the wrong movies (some was trying to review House but entered it as Roadhouse... same thing with The Wiz and The Wizard.) I know I'm being nitpicky (which reminds me, I need to get an account at nitpickers.com), but if people are going to harp on a movie, they should least make sure they present the correct name, and not the name of another movie. Granted, going through and editing all these little changes throughout the board must be annoying, but I'm willing to volunteer if you're interested.

Just thought of something else that might be good. Given that Hairspray has reposted the guidelines for posting, might there be a way to automatically email said guidelines to anyone and everyone that registers to post?

That's actually a great idea. One of the other moderated forums I go to does just that. It also lets the moderator(s) know if the email address is valid and working at the time of sign up.

Subject: Re: What features would you like?
I'd like there to be an option for people to send pictures of items. I have many items in the toys from my childhood, and it would be simple for me to take the pictures, upload them, and send them to the site.

I guess people forgot about the smilie directory:
http://www.inthe00s.com/smilies/
you need to use them with an img tag around the link on the page: http://www.inthe00s.com/smilies/nerd.gif

that will be in the new version of the software... I tested it out too, and it works excellent. I can't wait for that, since I know people have been asking for it for quite some time now.

I think the private messages sort of cover that, Howard, though if there was a chat function (Java or otherwise) you could probably do private IMs on that :) Depends on what Chucky can whip up methinks.
Subject: Re: What features would you like?
I tried to copy a smiley from the smiley directory but it didn't work.
Can we replace some of the smileys that are available now? most of them look kind of sad or confused. I would like the smiley girl who bats her eyes in rapid succession, please.
thank you! ;D

Will we have the option to set the language to UK English or American English etc?

I have no plans on adding new features until I upgrade the software.

You have to put (img)url(/img) around it, but replace the () with . Or, you can click on the 4th button in the 2nd row of the "Add YABBC tags" above and paste the URL between the tags. :)

when I find the time... I have to set up and configure an entire new server before I can even begin the software install. I also have to install three different versions of software in order to convert the existing messages into the newer format. so it probably will be awhile before it all gets done and ready.

I wish that there was a feature you could install that as someone is writing a personal insult, their keyboard will zap them so they will think twice about doing it. (Hey, I can dream, can't I? ;) ;D)
