Subject: 1960s Fashion

Written By: violet_shy on 09/15/21 at 7:44 pm

Ok so I've done some research on vintage fashion from before 1970. Here's what found:

In the early 60s, both men and women's fashion were sweet, and still looked very 50s. The party dresses, the housewife look, it still felt like 1950s fashion. Then I noticed a change in the fashion around 1965. It was edgier with bold colors, patterns, and earth tones. I also noticed there was a hint of futurism in the fashion styles that also later became popular in the 90s.

I have to say, I like early 60s fashion because it was closer to the 50s. But mid to late 60s fashion was very unique!

What you are saying is accurate, but you are just noticing this NOW? You are basically stating the obvious. It has all been extremely well documented. The fashion revolution of the 1960s, the advent of the miniskirt (said to have been invented by Mary Quant), etc is well known. Trust me, it was an amazing time. If you had experienced it you would never be longing for the dullness of the 1950s again.

Well, I was never into the 60s until recently when I looked up futuristic fashion. I know more about the 50s than the 60s. So this is pretty much all new to me. I don't know much about the 1930s either. But I will get into that and do my research.  :)

I suspect as you get into the 60s you will become highly psychedelicized.  :D

The biggest fashion shift of the 60s by far was the shift in the target audience. The 60s were the first decade where clothing companies marketed towards teenagers. Up till then fashion was marketed towards older adults (hence why pre-60s fashion often looks like "old people clothes")

Correct. It wasn't until the late 50s that teenagers were even recognized as being a demographic. It was at that point that movies started being targeted to teenagers. "I Was A Teenage Werewolf", etc. By the cultural 60s (1964 onward) the youth market exploded.

Great observation about pre-60s fashions looking like "old people clothes". ;D
