Subject: Why did women's hair suddenly become short in the 50s?
Written By: christopher on 01/07/18 at 2:12 pm
Here is the same actress in the 40s with longer and in the 50s with shorter hair. While Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn looked gourgeous both in the 40s with longer hair and in the 50s with shorter, I think the longer look of the 40s looked better on most women, do you agree/disagree? This is Dorothy Malone, but I can list other names where in the 50s they looked worse with the shorter hair, that actually added even more years to them than they had: Gloria DeHaven, Lana Turner and Doris Day. If you Google "Gloria DeHaven 1947" and compare the photos with those of her from the very early 50's you can see the short do turns many women look much more mature than they already are.
My question is WHY shorter do's became popular suddenly in the 50s? And not only older actresses did it, many newcomers in the 50s alredy sported the look. Maybe this is why the 50s are often portrayed as a decade when most womne looked like moms, and only the ponytail look some high school girls sported looked youthful? Maybe it's a cycle as the 20s and 30s were both about shorter styles, the 40s longer, while the 50s shorter. The mid/late 60s brough long hair back. I dig some women with short hair (there are some that even look better with short hair than with long), but I think for most long works best, anyone agree/disagree?

Ahhh ... Dorothy Malone was one of my favourite actresses of the time. Something about her eyes! It only took a couple of the A list actresses to make the shorter hair style popular. Liz Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe and Kim Novak are the names that immediately sprung to mind when I read the topic title. Oh, and don't forget the quirky Shirley Maclean ... I don't think I ever saw her with longer hair.
I think girls love it when short hair is the fashion ... for the same reason most men keep their hair short. Maintenance, time and cost are far less!

It's easier to put elaborate curls on short hair, which is the look most went for.
Towards the end of the 1950s you get the beehive.

After the Second World War, a woman was found more often in the workplace, and to cater for the needs for hygiene and safety hair had to be shorter. Think "Rosie the Riveter"!

On a side note, Rosie the Riveter always looked to me like the 40s version of Pat Benatar. Is it just me that Pat looks like Rosie? I just saw she actually did portray a Rosie the Riveter-like character in her Shadows of the Night music video.
