Personally, I'd argue that the Animals' recording of "The House of the Rising Sun" could qualify as the first psychedelic rock song. It's a long, woozy, ethereal expedition of electric organ riffs, a loose structure bent on instrumental solos, and howlingly visceral vocals to match the brooding mood. For 1964, that song was like a UFO crash landing on a world that had no idea what hit it.
