It ended in 1989 in my opinion when the Berlin Wall fell.

Most people either give 1945-1991, 1946 to 1989, or 1945 to 1989.
I know it doesn't really matter, but I'm curious to learn. 8)

Like girls in my 8th grade class would sing,
"This is the song that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends, some people started singing it not know it what it was, and they'll continue singing it forever just because..."(repeat a billion times until the other person goes mentally insane).
Imagine a bunch of bratty 13/14 year old girls repeating that over and over and over and over. >:( >:(

I'll take 1991. The fall of the Berlin Wall was when we knew it was only a matter of time. Seeing the USSR dissolve itself in December 25, 1991 was the moment it was official. Like all such moments of apparent triumph, it was fleeting.
