Subject: Magical Mystery Tour - Now on PBS

Written By: danootaandme on 12/16/12 at 5:02 am

I saw this in 1967, it was panned by critics, even shunned by fans, but some of us thought it great fun.  I still think it is and now they are showing it for the first time since.

I was "stunned" when I saw it a few months ago, the songs are classics, and forget the plot.

When I saw the title "On PBS" I kind of assumed that it would be some sort of Sesame Street show.

I saw this for the first time in the late 1970s, at a movie theater. The songs were great, the plot was a little "different". There are a few scenes I remember that were funny.  I liked it. (But I liked "Help" and "A Hard days night" better.)

To me; the Beatles are the greatest musical act, far distancing everyone else. I can't imagine what I'd put in 2nd place...The Stones or Elvis.
But that's just my opinion.

Ah, the Rutles Beatles...

I can't quite recall the whole movie, but I know they dressed as animals for "I am the Walrus" . I don't think it was any other time in that fim. Someone else can confirm that.

Magical Mystery Tour was a precursor of the Monty Python type of entertainment.

There's a plot?  :o

It's really difficult to 'love' MMT and I think the BBC found this out a little too late when they scheduled this as a 'must-see' for viewing the day after Christmas 1967...

Trouble was (apart from making no sense at all), the film was meant to showcase the garish psychedelic colours of the era...but just one problem - the TV channel it was shown on was only broadcasting in black and white at the time!

So, neither the Fabs or the BBC came out as winners here...

They showed it here in the theater, I count myself as one of the lucky ones who made sure I saw it.  It wasn't meant to be shown on the big screen so it was grainy, on television it was much clearer.  I liked it.

Because Paul is the walrus.

They sort of played up to the "Paul is Dead" phenomenon that was created out of the secret clues of Paul's death on their "Sgt. Pepper " album.

Blue Jay Way was written by George Harrison while waiting to be picked up at LAX airport to be taking to my friends Al's brother-in- law's home on Blue Jay Way. George waited while the rest of the Beatles were at the Whiskey a Go Go bar, the "In" place to be at the time. Al's brother-in-law had an interest in the bar and had many entertainers at his house after hours. Al is now in LA in the recording business...my very little connection to the Beatles I thought I share.

So, does it help to be stoned while watching it?
