Subject: Some 60s toys. Did you have any of these?

Written By: warped on 11/27/12 at 5:55 pm

As a child in the 1960s, I'm trying to remember some of the toys we played with. Here are a few.
Any of these familiar to you?

Bill Ding

Hit the Spot and Bill Ding predate the sixties.  They were toys left over from my uncle's childhood that were in my grandparents' basement.

Hot Wheels cars and tracks -- 1968

I had Hot Wheels in the seventies.  They were flashier than Matchbox, but lower quality.  They were both die-cast, not just plastic crap.

That neon colored doo-dah was actually popular again in the 90s.

I wasn't born even around in the '60s, but I had an Etch-a-Sketch and a slinky (got tangled up after one day). We also owned the Game of Life and Battleship.

I was a huge fan of hot wheels cars:

I had these, probably in 1968.

And the race tracks too, in yellow and in orange. But I got those in the early 70s

I was a huge fan of hot wheels cars:

Matchbox Cars and Hot Wheels, the complete list, every car, sorted by year, name, and picture.

Great walk down memory lane.  If you were too young to know whether your cars were "new" or "hand-me-downs", and you're too old to remember how young you were when you were playing with them, you can almost answer the question of "how old were you when you started playing with die-cast cars" by browsing to find the oldest car you remember.

What's really amazing is that you've probably never seen the more obscure vehicles in your collection for 20-30 years, but you will still know - immediately - which ones were "yours", and which ones you don't remember.

What's really awesome is that the pictures of these toys look like toys should look, with all the little paint chips and scratches that make them recognizable as not merely a collector's items, but as something that some kid somwhen actually enjoyed.

I had no notion of future value.  I played with my Matchbox Cars until they were in pieces.  I used to smash them with rocks and stuff!

OMG I officially love you!

I have a later version of this toy.  I found the blocks again recently, couldn't recall the game name or how it was played.  I kept intending to take pictures and post the question on here somewhere.  Still not sure that name rings a bell, maybe it was called something else in the UK (or the 80s)

So can anyone remember the rules?

I had a lot of these toys-including Hot Wheels and those orange tracks. I really liked this boy in second grade and he was really into Hot Wheels so I had to be, too. I kept asking for Hot Wheels for Christmas. Santa granted my wish but I had to wait about a week until I could play with them-until my father and older brother were done playing with them.  >:(  ;D ;D ;D

This was my favorite:

The Splittin' Image.

I don't know if I had one or he (the kid that I liked) had one. Either way, if I had one today-do you know how much that would be worth? We have sold a bunch of old Hot Wheels (and Matchbox) and made a couple of bucks.

Omigosh, my brother had those games! He even had the ring toss one that's shown except I think the rings had to be placed onto the dolphin's beak. Those games rocked!

Back in the 1960s, Roy Cohn was the proud owner of the Lionel Corporation!  I did have a hand-me-down Lionel train set that my grandparents bought for my dad in the forties.  It was a nuisance to put it together because the current ran through connecting rods at the ends of each track length, and if just one wasn't connected right, the whole string wouldn't work.  So I spent a lot of time cursing and stomping and checking each of those little rods.  Once I got it running, however, it had plenty of zip and it was all die-cast.  Built like a brick sh*t house.  I used to put Matchbox cars on the crossings and the locomotive would knock the right out of the way!

If you have one, and it still works...

OPQPNj8NbBA

...it even plays Stairway to Heaven these days.

(Had one, also had one of those Tomy Waterful Ring Toss Games games, and that 3-rail Lionel train set looks familiar.  Somehow I associate the ring toss game with the 80s.)

I wanted to be Rhett Butler.  He was a dick, but he was waaaay cooler than Ashley Wilkes...oh, wait a minute wrong thread.

Here is a game we had, "Don't Break the Ice."  The object was to knock the little ice blocks out of the pond without making the guy fall through.  It was kind of pointless because late in somebody got the mallet and had no choice but to make the guy fall through!

You put the sticks into the tube and then you poured the marbles in. The sticks would hold up the marbles. And then each person in turn pulls out a stick and hope that the marbles do not fall. When all the marbles have fallen, the person with the least amount of marbles wins.

My brother and I had Ker-Plunk for awhile but somehow it lost all it's marbles. As a kid I never went anywhere
without my bag of marbles or my tops. After a bad day of marbles I needed replacements, Ker-Plunk was
convenient, instantly replacing my marbles. My parents never knew what became of those marbles, to them
it was just another broken game.

We have Rack-O that we bought maybe about 10 years ago or so because my youngest step-daughter wanted it. We played it several times when we was staying with us. But, she doesn't stay with us much anymore and we are usually a bit busy when she does-like playing with HER kids.

I remember Hang On Harvey but we didn't have it.

I recall having one like this only it was purple..maybe it was a knock-off and not true Matchbox?  ;D ;D I loved matchbox cars.

I found a photo I took ...maybe 10 years ago, of some of the toy cars I still had, even though many have wear and tear. The cars either date from the 1960s or 1970s

Maybe some of you had some of these:

I see these and think, "I wonder how much they go on eBay."  ;D ;D ;D  Yeah, occupational hazard. We have sold many cars like these-sometimes for about $10 a pop. Now, if you have any Hot Wheels red lines-those go higher. I can't see if they are red lines or not from the photo.

2 of them did, but their tires were half-broken from overuse, most of these cars had heavy wear and tear and were thrown into the trash over 5 years ago.
