Subject: Sam Cooke

Written By: belmont22 on 11/26/12 at 4:50 pm

Sam is probably my favorite old-time R&B artist (edit: I guess he's more soul than R&B) My favorites are "Send Me", "What a Wonderful World" and "Chain Gang".

Does anyone else find his songs really melancholy? They're so innocent and sweet sounding, yet also kind of sad.

I love Sam Cooke.

I find myself singing some of his songs throughout the day.

Love Sam Cooke, his voice was sooooo smooth.  I am old enough to remember when he was murdered, another sad, sad, day.  :\'(

This is probably my favorite

who doesn't love "What a Wonderful World!" My daughters preschool learned how to sing it, and sang it for their "spring concert" the Friday before Mother's Day.    It was wonderful, and it still makes me cry when I see the video.  The teachers taught the order of the song by holding color cards.  The kids new the colors and could associate the color with the verse.  Wonderful

Oh yes I grew up listening to an old Sam Cooke audio cassette. I always like "Twistin' the Night Away". I always thought he was saying "Everybody's peelin' grapes" instead of "Everybody's feelin' great" :D

I think you are thinking of a different song.  Louis Armstronh also did a song called (What a) Wonderful world in 1967 (three years after Sam Cooke's death.)  They have completely different lyrics and music.  This is Louis Armstrong's version.

And this is Sam Cooke's version (released in 1960).  I'm sure you've heard of this one, as well.

As for me, I love most of Sam Cooke's hits.  He had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, and a further three after his death.

Hard to pick a favorite for me.

I like to sing "Another Saturday Night" every payday.  ;D

I used to sing "Chain Gang" while driving to work.  Yeah, a bit dramatic, but it cheered me up for some reason.

I adore "Cupid", although I love The Spinners' version better.  :-\\

I had no idea that Dr. Hook's version of "Only sixteen" was a cover until tonight.

^ That's right; "Wonderful World" should not be confused with "What A Wonderful World" (as they are two completely different songs altogether), even though the complete phrase is mentioned in Sam Cooke's song.

Carly Rae Jepsen samples 'Cupid' in her song 'Tiny Little Bows'.

I love Sam Cooke.  They used to play his songs on the doo wop/soul shows I listened to when I was a kid.  I didn't hear how he was murdered until years later.  I'm glad I got to listen to his music without thinking about all that sordid crap.

The "Wonderful World" song lives on forever in "Animal House."

For a good reason, I would have associated the song with the title "Don't know much about history".

About the only artist who made a 'twist' record sound half-decent...

Almost all of his stuff is legendary, especially 'A Change Is Gonna Come'...

I love Sam Cooke. He had a lot of GREAT songs. One he did was not as popular as others but I love it-in fact it is my favorite rendition of the song.

And consequently, I associate the song with John Belushi.  :)

Another Saturday Night is one that I sing frequently.  ;D

Born January 22, 1931, so he'd be 81 going on 82 years old!
