Subject: 1890s vs 1960s

Both decade periods were very similiar as far as ideological changes in society. Which time period would you rather live in?

While Ragtime was revolutionary in terms of pop music, the first automobiles were only for the rich, and there was still some nostalgia left over as late as the 1960s. But it was still before personal computers, cellphones, enviornmental conciousness, and of course there was this thing called the Beatles. However, there were lots of strikes in the 1890s (the most infamous the Pullman Strike) as well and the 1960s overall had a better economy. Also, airline service was probably at its best in the 1960s as well. You had televsion, air conditioning, sound movies, a good youth culture, all what the Gay Nineties lacked. Also, segregation was waxing in the 1890s but rapidly diminishing in the 1960s, and the income gap was lower as well (1890s were the end of the Gilded Age).

Don't get the 1890s and 1960s connection.
However the 1920s and the 1960s were EXTREMELY similar. Both had rebellious countercultures (flappers in the 20s, hippies in the 60s), sexual revolutions (condoms were invented in the 20s, plus the automobile became widely available to the working classes for the first time....we all know what happened in the 60s), wide illegal drug use (remember, alcohol was illegal in the 20s) , "rebellious music" (laughable today but jazz music was considered "satanic" and "not music" in the 20s), focus on the arts, moral outcries over young people, etc.

Also, rock and roll in the 1950s was considered obscene by older people. There was also great concern in the '50s over teenagers being "out of control."
I think the saying "the more things change, the more they stay the same" applies.

The 1890s saw a change in society's values much like the 60's. Also, the 1890s were a highly praised decade up until the 1950s, which is the same for the 1960s being popular from then to current(though by mid 2010s, the 60s could be put in as history).

Even 100 years from now people will remember the 1960s more than they will remember the 1890s. Just being honest.
We went from being so conservative pre-1960s to being so liberal afterwards, that 1957 and 1967 was like a 40 year difference!
In my opinion I'd compare the 1890s more to the peaceful 1950s or 1990s.

1890s vs 1960s
~ Decadeology is the discussion and/or comparison of two or more years or decades that have no bearing on one another. ~
Fair warning, just incase anyone hopes to gain a high post count from this thread

I'd rather live in the 1960's than the 1890's. Sure, the 1890's gave us lights and indoor plumbing, but Otto Bettmann wrote in the book "The Good Old Days...They Were Terrible" showed us that The Gay 90's weren't gay as in happy...more like gay as in lame!
The 60's...that was a decade of change. Since the JFK Assassination, the view of America changed and many thought The American Way was dead, then in 1964 The Beatles came to America and people LOVED them!
I always say to myself I was born in the wrong decade...I should've been in my 20's during the 60's.

Don't forget the 1920s was a huge change also. We went from horse carriages to cars in such a short time. But since decadeology is forbidden I'm not going to compare it to any other decade or time.

The 1920s reminds me of the 1994-2006, but I won't go too much into it.
I go with the 60s myself, but seeing youtube clips of the 1890s is pretty trippy.

id definitely rather live in the 1960s, of course. the 60s were comfortably modern, the 1890s were still only a notch above Medieval in most parts of the world.

Wow, thanks for showing us that clip. If I had been living back then I probably would have been thinking, "What will they think up next?"
I think the 60s are my favorite decade (closely followed by the '80s and 1990s), but I am still very curious about the 1890s since I like studying pop culture from previous decades.

I would prefer to live in the 1960's.At least they are more modern compared to the 1890's.That decade seems very ancient lol.
