Fantastic song! How can anyone not like it? ???
(I'd be more worried if you liked the horrid disco remake she did in 1976, or the equally terrible remix from 1988!)
(Interesting fact...the song was inspired by 'On Broadway' by The Drifters, an equally wonderful song!)
Her stuff from this period should be readily available almost anywhere...there's no licencing restrictions or problems as far as I know...
I think I've got the thing half a dozen times over on various compilations!

Love that song ...and a number of others by Pet Clark. I have been listeningwatching lately (on youtube) to Dusty Springfield, Pet Clark and Cilla Black. I can't seem to get enough of that era of music...
Another great song of her is "Don't Sleep In the Subway"...
You are showing some great taste there Tiffeny.. :)

I've always liked Petula Clark, I can remember going to the roller rink when I was a little kid and they'd play "Downtown," and then all the little girls would scream DOWNTOWN! at the top of their lungs. :D
I also really like this song as well:

Oh, trust me, there's always people that dislike something you like.
I hate those people who don't like the 'Downtown' song! ;D

...covered in 1979 on the first B-52s album?
...remixed in 1988 by Pete Slaghuis: DMC 68-2, September 1988 as "Downtown '88", with Petula's vocals and a random house backing track
...covered about the same time by Julie "Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun" Brown?
Obscure and embarassing covers? Yeah, I do that. Being embarassed about having a Petula Clark copy in your MP3 collection is like being embarassed about having naked people in your pr0n.
(I'll have you know I'm monitoring multiple video feeds of downtown Oakland after a controversial jury verdict, and turning the MP3 player from NWA to covers of Petula Clark just about gave the poor thing whiplash. So far, that's the most serious injury :)

Yeah, they should have left that tape on the shelf. Not so good, Fred!
::)
(The rest of that album is awesome.)
