From your list I chose'''

Son of a Preacher Man----Dusty Springfield
All Along the Watchtower----The Jimi Hendrix Experience
I Started a Joke----The Bee Gees
This Guy's In Love With You----Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass
America----Simon and Garfunkel

Other great songs missing from your list were...

(Sittin') On the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
What A Wonderful World - Loius Armstrong
Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations (I preferred BJ Thomas' version)
Delilah - Tom Jones
Do You Know the Way To San Jose - Dione Warwick (one of my favourite songs)
Hello, Goodbye - The Beatles
Help Yourself - Tom Jones
Honey - Bobby Goldsborough (love it or hate it...it was a big hit)
I've Gotta Get A Message To You - Bee Gees
Jesamine - The Casuals (possibly my favourite song of this year)
Lady Willpower - Gary Puckett & The Union Gap
Little Green Apples - (recorded by a couple of artists)
Love Is Blue - Paul Mauriot
MacArthur Park - Richard Harris
Mighty Quinn - Manfred Mann
Mrs Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel (perhaps the most recognized song of this year)
Step Inside Love - Cilla Black (another favourite of mine)
Those Were The Days - Mary Hopkin
Young Girl - Gary Puckett & The Union Gap

I didn't see it on my 1968 song list (or I would have chosen it as well). That is a great song!

From the above-listed, in non-ranking order:

The Beatles: Lady Madonna
The Rolling Stones: Jumping Jack Flash
Big Brother and The Holding Company/Janis Joplin: Piece of My Heart
Simon & Garfunkel: America
The Doors: Hello I Love You

And

"Hey Jude" is one of the best songs ever recorded.

Jaw-droppingly fine song, as was the late John Fred's 'Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)' (which was actually released in late '67, but didn't peak until '68, so there!)

"Revolution Number 9" was recorded and released in 1968.  It is the best known composition for tape collage (musique concrete). Popular artists such as Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd also experimented with tape and non-traditional compositions in the sixties.

1968, a very good year musically. It is hard to choose just five but if I must, my five would come frome the other slot.

Legend Of A Mind....The Moody Blues

Daddy, Where Did I Come From.....The Nice

The Pusher...Steppenwolf

Are You Happy....Iron Butterfly

Sympathy For The Devil....The Rolling Stones

Stoned Soul Picnic - The 5th Dimension.
Here's the original and it's also from 1968:
