Subject: Ginger Rogers

I'm wondering if there are any Ginger Rogers fans on this site?

Gotta say I was never much into those old films from the 30's and 40's, especially the musicals, unitl about ten years ago when I saw "The Green Mile".  I watched that film with a lady I was going with back then and when she saw the scenes with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in it, she said you just have to see that film some day.  I was reluctant, afterall it was a musical, but as often was the case she got her way.  She located a couple copies of some Fred and Ginger films and one night she insisted we watch one of them and if I didn't like it, she never bother me again with them.  One of the movies she found was "Swingtime" and although "bored" might be to harsh a word to use here, I would have much rather been watching the ballgame that was on at the time instead of trying to sit through that old black and white movie.

That all changed when in the film, there was a scene where Fred and Ginger drive up to a cabin or resort or someplace, with another couple and it's snow covered.  Anyhow it's a great setting.  That scene right there made me a Ginger Rogers fan where she and Fred are sitting on a bench and she snuggle ups to him and gives him this "look", that "look" that every guy wishes a lady would give him.  That scene too, I don't think Ginger Rogers ever looked prettier.  She's always looked great in the films I have seen her in, (which aren't a lot, but a few) but that one particular scene always stands out in my mind.  I've only seen "Swingtime" one time in it's entirety, catching parts of it over the years on TCM when that cable channel airs it.

I did catch a few hours of Fred and Ginger films a couple days ago when TCM ran them all back to back.  Unfortunately work got in the way, so just caught scenes here and there as I was in and out of the house all day.

It is Ginger Rogers Month for March and TCM is going to be airing Roger's films each Wednesday night for the rest of the month.  I look forward to that, even though they are films up to 70 years old, they will be new to me. A couple I have seen are "The Major and the Minor" and I can't think of the name right now but it's one with Shirley Temple set during World War II. In my opinion she was the prettiest of the actresses from that time, this coming from a guy who fell in love with Vivien Leigh when I saw "Gone With The Wind" when I was 18.  Also throw in Donna Reed, Olivia DaHaviland, Theresa Wright, Norma Shearer and Claudette Colbert.  But Ginger I think tops them all.

Oh by the way the Fred and Ginger scenes I would find out later were from "Top Hat" a film I did eventually see and have to admit liked.  I see now what caught John Coffey's attention.  :)

I'm still not a fan of the musical, I've tried to get into them, but I guess if Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers aren't in it, I'm not interested.  ???

I'm both a fan of old musicals and Ginger Rogers. She was an underrated dancer as well. Not flashy...but very competent. Good enough for the greatest movie dancer in history t0 work with her in 10 or so films!

There was also a tremendous comic timing that she possessed (and she was cute as well). I saw her in a number of films that she didn't sing or dance too and she was still entertaining.

Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did but only backwards and in high heels.
