Subject: Paul Revere and the Raiders
Written By: whistledog on 09/10/09 at 7:58 pm
Classic 60s band, who oddly enough had no hits in the UK ???
Formed in 1958 by Paul Revere and along with Mark Lindsay and several other players, they billed themselves as The Downbeats. Upon landing a record deal in 1960, they changed their name to Paul Revere and the Raiders and took North America by storm with a string of successful hits. In 1970 they shortened their name to The Raiders and scored their only US #1 hit with 'Indian Reservation'.
So what are your favourites?

Anything from their 'golden period' (1965-67), but especially 'Him Or Me'...
Their choice of costumery and image was completely 'lost' on us Brits and they barely caused a ripple here...a great pity!

Wow, there are so many to choose from.
I am lucky enough to have seen them in concert 3 times.
The first was at the Western Idaho Fair, probably in 1975 or 1976.
I saw them again 10 years later in 1985 at Disneyland.
Then in 1999, I saw them at a free concert in the park in Palmdale, California. They were the opening act for Johnny Rivers.

The costumes were, no doubt, their tongue-in-cheek way of trying to repel the British Invasion. ;)
They actually had some good stuff after they ditched the costumes, revamped their lineup, and went towards a more hard rock direction in about 1968-69.

Paul Revere still has a show at the Andy Williams Theater in Branson, Missouri. Every week I deliver down there and I always drive past the marquee with Paul's smiling mug up there right next to Andy. ;D ;D ;D

I never liked the group, to phony, to commercial. I think Dick Clark owned them, every other week he had them on his Saturday Bandstand Show promoting them as much as possible hoping the kids would buy their records so he make millions off his investment.
