Subject: Movies set in the Colonial Age?
Written By: Ryan112390 on 06/10/09 at 10:51 pm
Can you please list any films, animated or live action, that are set between 1600 and 1780...Basically any films set in the time period wherein men wore wigs and stockings, that whole hundred year or so span.

1600 to 1780? This is all I could think of...
Barry Lyndon (1975)
The Devils (1971) (17th-century France)
1776 (1972)
The Time of Their Lives (1946) (Abbott & Costello and Revolutionary War]
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) (close but set in 1789)

You've got some KS coming your way because 1776, Barry Lyndon, and The Bounty are some of my favorite movies ever! I would like to add Start the Revolution Without Me a comedy set in the French Revolution.

I know it has been mentioned already but one of my all-time favorite movies is 1776. I watch it every year around the 4th of July & I must know it almost line per line. I can NEVER get tired of it.
Some others:
-The Crucible (about the Salem witch trials)
-Love at Stake (a comedy about the Salem witch trials)
-History of the World Part I (has a scene about the French Revolution.)
-The Corsican Brothers (Cheech & Chong's version of the French Revolution)
-Orphans in the Storm (GW Griffith's silent version of the French Revolution-which according to the movie the Bolsheviks were involved. :D :D ;D ;D ;D )
-Horatio Hornblower series. (A little later-set during the Napoleonic wars)
-John Adams series
-The Patriot (with Mel Gibson)
-The Tale of Two Cities
-The Scarlet Pimpernel
There are many others but that is all I can think of right now.

1776.
I haven't seen it in at least 20 years, and I do remember liking what I saw at the time.
Yes, July 4th of coming up, I think I'll Netflix that bad boy.

FYI, they remastered it-editing in all the stuff that was deleted. It is now at least a 1/2 longer than the original theatrical release. They even put the song back in that Richard Nixon ordered out (which was supposed to be destroyed but wasn't.)
Yes, I just watched it-TWICE. The first time was my sister's copy which was recorded off the t.v. that was cut so bad it should have been called "176". And after we got home, my husband HAD to watch the REAL version that was NOT cut at all.

Oh boy! Ohhhh boy! This guy has a messianic/crucifixion complex (not a recognized DSM diagnosis). Look at this, and the Mad Max movies, and The Passion of the Christ...and those phone calls! It's like they're nailing poor Mel up on the cross right in front of you!
He is a profoundly disturbed man, this Mel Gibson!
