Subject: lost song about San Francisco from around 1960...
Written By: hiumus on 02/03/09 at 1:07 pm
The song begins: "Down on the Barbary Coast of San Francisco..." It was a folky ballad that recounted a tragedy involving lovers and was sung by a male in a whispering, almost hoarse voice. The music had kind of a faux-Chinese feel to it and the song may be based on a true story from old Chinatown...
I heard it once or twice on the radio in the Pacific NW around 1960 when I was about 10. It may have been a locally produced record from Vancouver, Seattle or Portland...
Please help me identify it if you can; it has haunted me for too many years!

Looks like you figured it out on another board.
Best I can come up with is the same as you:
Twilight Bar in 'Frisco (Frank Gardiner Song) by Johnny Ashcroft.

Unfortunately it turned out to not be the Johnny Ashcroft song, I discovered after ordering the cd from Australia...Thanks for trying though!
