Subject: Hairstyles Of The 60's.
Written By: 90steen on 01/10/09 at 11:56 am
The bouffant, the flip, the beehive, french buns...
Does anyone else think the 60's was the best time for hair?
But I have a question that I never got to understanding,
how did young women get those kind of hairstyles?
The flip I kind of have the idea... but it's still kind of fuzzy to me.
Especially the bouffant.

Hi 90steen.
The 60s were a blessing and curse.
From my point of view women were lovely creatures during the decade (counting out the hippies) and went to great leangths to get thier hair into submission for these hairdos. I'm a baby of the 80s, but my mother was a teen in the 60s. And it was sleeping nights on curlers and getitng up in the morning for the combout and getting jabbed with bobby pins and putting in stinking lauqers and pomades and other products. And since my mother was a woman of color, she saw the "hot comb" on a regular basis (and was burned by it!)
But for all the hell she went through in the preparation, the end result was wonderful. My mother wore a variation of the Jakie Kennedy flip. (This was around 1967-1969) My mother wore her hair around her chin with bangs and puffed at the crown.(With a little bow at the center) There is a photo of her at 18 in my living room, but it's so fragile, I'm not allowed to move it off it's peg. I hope the description helps. Think kind of like a tones down Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray 'do.
(For me, I'd like the big Brigette Bardot/Sophia Loren bouffant!)

Hi 90steen, most of the girls back in the 60's teased their hair up to make sit high and big and spray it sugar water to make it stiff so it would hold up, there was a rumor back then that a girl sprayed it so much that she developed a nest of worms that ate through her skull and killed her...no really it did!!
Some other fads that the girls did was to bleach a streak of blond in front of their head like Lily on the Munsters and some wore "falls" it was a partial wig that a hung down the back of the head and a hair band over the top of her head held it place it was a prelude of the hair extention they do today. Black hair was the color of choice for the greasettes it went well with their tight over the knee black skirts white ruffle satin blouses and ballerina slippers and black sheer or net stockings...HOT HOT HOT! I loved that look!

I have to Chaperone prom this year- and I thought it would be great to get a 60's look with a 60's prom dress.... I thought it would be a hoot to do and a splash for the kids to see their teacher done soo. What do ya think - and can you find a vintage dress in a plus size??? :-\\ :-\\

The funny thing is, I still wear my hair like I did in the 60s-long with bangs.

Thanks. I was 6 years old in that photo. To see a more recent one of me, venture over to the "Say Cheese" area.
