Subject: "Across the Universe"...A perfect movie of the 60's through Beatles music.

you've seen this movie and do you recommend it? I'm highly interested in watching it. I think it just released on DVD and I wonder if my 18 year old daughter would like it?

Yes, I highly recommend this movie to an 18 year old, but she must have some knowledge of what the 60's where all about, it's innocent but true to the 60's movements...free love drugs, rock and roll some nudity. This movie is a musical masterpeice with a genius story line that mends situations and paraties with the genius of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison songs.

The movie was not about the songs but the songs were about the movie, their lyrics as we know them take on a new life with situations that formed the 60's cultural changes, they are a perfect fit and Julie Taymore and the production company used them perfectly together.

A must see for all.

that's a great review. thanks a bunch hot_wax. my daughter was in a singing group back in high school and one of their concerts was 60's themed so I'm sure she'd enjoy it and appreciate it. They sang some Beatles tunes which brought many smiles to us parents.

Sadly, this movie came and went so quickly that most people I know have never even heard of it. I was fortunate enough to see it just before it disappeard from the movie theaters. I recently acquired a copy so I can see it again and again. I can't praise it highly enough.  It's definitely a MUST SEE. For those of us old enough to have been there, it's a real nostalgia trip. A somewhat idealized but lovingly done,  highly effective tribute to that most unique period.

Hi reubenb, you're right, the movie came out at the end of September and gone in a flash. I saw some pre-advertisements for the movie coming to your theaters soon and nothing else on it at all until my son gave me the DVD a couple of days ago, I forgot about it, they could have done a better job on promoting it, the movie was great. Maybe the age group that had any real interest in that period don't go to high price theaters like they used to and wait until their DVD's to come out...thank God for DVD's

Yes, like you, I lived the crazy years of the 60's as a teenager, I replied to various past posts related to the different subjects about the 60's over the past few years trying to put the right words together to paint pictures on how it was then to younger minds, words to discribe the " Love Generation" beliefs that created hate between Americans, music lyrics that inspired culture changes, a decade of years that gave equal rights to Americans that 400 years before couldn't do, a corrupt goverment agency killing President John Kennedy Bobby Kennedy Dr. King and with all of this going on in front of us it was hind sight that we saw clearly what we done as a generation.

"Across the Universe" put's it best on how it was then, the music and story is the best mix I've seen and couldn't be better. I own the DVD too and will watch it over and over like you...enjoy!

I was just a little older than a teenager in the '60s. How much older?  I would rather not say. I am a baby boomer only in spirit, not in body.  :)

If you're on this site and getting involved with young ideas like me, we are as old as we think we are...I'm still think I'm 18 in the head, but my grand father's face in the mirror says different!

Yes! I love this movie! I bought it after my daughter went to see it twice at the theater and said I'd like it. I'm a big Beatles fan and was a little skeptical at first, but after watching it, I think they did a great job.  I know it's one that we'll watch over and over.

I watched it again and appreciated even more. What amazed me is how Julie Taymore added the missing links to coordinate the subject matters of the Beatle songs and the story. It was like Lennon, McCartney and Harrison subconsciously wrote their songs that were small parts of a big story, and if they where all alive today, maybe they would have connected the dots of all their songs and they too would have done a movie or two like Julie did with them and how she got these new young actors to get it right and sang the songs better than the Beatles did...well almost.

Enjoy!...

I finally got to see it. I couldn't help but be reminded of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band (with the BeeGees and Peter Frampton).  Yeah, it is one of my guilty pleasures.  :-[  The story, however, reminded me of Hair.

All in all, you really can't beat the music. Oh, yeah, I did like the movie-something to watch again and again.

I've only seen the first 1/3 of the movie and still need to finish it. It started kinda slow & a little hokey for me, with Jude singing on the beach, sorta like John Travolta & ONJ's opening in Grease, and then I remembered it's a total musical, like Rent, where they sing in almost every scene change. The good thing is that it gets better and better as it moves along. I like Max, and his sister and will hopefull watch the rest of it soon. I'm a total Beatles fan and was impressed with the covers of the Beatles songs done in the movie and thought, if I covered them, I'd do them just like they did in the movie. well done, they were. I'll give my full report when I've completed the movie.  Take it Easy  8)

Hi Cat! I liked the Sgt. Pepper movie with it's goofy plot, the Bee Gee's did a good job with the songs but it's far from the level of the Universe movie. I have the CD of the music now, they did a great job with the songs alone from the movie scenes, the arrangements and compositions on a few cuts where better then the original sing song versions, I can't get "Dear Prudence" out of my head for a week now, it's haunting melody the way it's done, get the CD you won't be disappointed.

Tia, it is a musical, but it's the Beatles music. Watch it again, give it another shot, maybe it will grow on you. I don't know anything about the Nightmare movie to say anything about it only that the title alone sounds like I would have walked out on it too.

yeah it's the beatles music and i love the beatles but i wasn't real big on the rearrangements from what i heard. what was great about the beatles was the sophisticated writing for a four-piece band focused on electric guitars and bass and keyboards and great three-part vocal harmonies, with elaborate studio work and remixes, and the rearrangements for the movie seemed more orchestral. but maybe i'll watch it again at some point. someone said it started off weak and got better and i gave up on it after about 20 minutes so...

Since watching the movie a couple of days ago, I have been on a Beatles kick. Since I am lucky to have all their albums on CD, I have been going through all their albums and maybe playing one or two songs or playing the entire album. Right now, I listening to Fixing a Hole on the Sgt. Pepper's album and I can't help but thinking of George Burns singing it the old movie.  :D ;D ;D

Badfinger-fan, Yeah! the whole concept was cool, did you catch the little references to other Beatle songs too? it made me think that Julie even brought the Beatles secret message thing to the movie also, I caught more of them after a couple of viewings, check out the back ground on the scenes and props, she did excellent job. I was a little slow with Prudance, I didn't connect with "I want to hold your hand" with her in my first viewing.

After 44 years listening to the Beatles songs and how I interpert them all this time and invisioned their stories in my head, Julie certainly put a hole new perspective on their meanings to me now, she re-invented the Beatles to me and that's cool!

PS...get the CD

Yeah, I wasn't too sure about Prudence singing "I Want To Hold Your Hand" if she was singing it to the football player or the cheerleader.  :-\\  But I did get the reference to the line  "She came in through the bathroom window" or the guy at the window who said something about "When I'm 64".  ;) ;D ;D

Prudence was singing to the cheerleader, she struggled through most of the movie trying to find herself, because of her sexuality. That was a taboo subject in the sixties, and it ate away at Prudence, you could tell. By the time we see her again at the "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" scene, you can tell she is happier, because she found herself, and found someone to love, in a group of people who don't judge her for her sexuality.

Oh, did anyone else notice Salma Hayek in the movie? It took me a second to realize it was her!

Hi Baby! Yes it came clear to me after the second veiwing when she sang the lyrics as written,"...I want to be your man..." I knew the nurse was familar but didn't know it was Salma Hayek at until the credits, but it took the second time to realize they all were her.

SPOILER ALERT....if you haven't seen the movie read no futher......

Okay, I've seen the movie and I can tell you, I loved it. I love all the little allusions in the movie. We know
the characters were named for Beatles songs or parts of Beatles songs, Like JoJo. I liked how max was holding
a little silver hammer in one scene. How in the underwater scene Lucy and Jude were posed as John and Yoko
on the cover Rolling Stone Magazine. How Jude tried to draw a green apple, the Beatles logo, crossed it out
and cut the apple in half and tried to draw it again, the later Beatles logo. Dr. Robert (Bono) drove in a bus like
the one in Magical Mystery Tour, also the bus Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters traveled the U.S., they also had
the Electric Kool - Aid. Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey were often at odds, the reason Dr. Gary wouldn't see Dr.
Roberts? The Splatter Art Stuart Sutcliffe was into and so much more.

Non Beatle connections:

JoJo was clearly Jimi Hendrix with the purple shirt and bandana.

Sadie was clearly Janis Joplin, slugging from the liquor bottle and right down to her painted Porsche (quick view, roof scene)

Sadie and the Po Boys were a reference to Willie and The Poor Boys in CCR's Down On The Corner

Joe Cocker was...well...Joe Cocker

Edit to add:

I completely forgot to say. That fringed jacket that Dr. Roberts was wearing, I have one just like it. I bought it in
1975, I still have it and it still fits.  ;D

Loki, you see what I mean, and all that from only one viewing, cool! the whole movie is a real trip through Beatlemania. You saw a lot of Julie's tidbits in one sitting and there's more if we keep watching, like the car, it was part of the crowd and only for an instance but just enough time to keep her "messages" a big part of the movie. I like how she worked Prudance out of the closet. It's a masterpiece of a movie, I have to watch it again and look for more clues.

I wanted a fringe suede back in 69' but my new bride had other thoughts about how to spend the $150..."YES DEAR!!"

PS...I hope your dad is feeling fine.

Thanks for the kind words about my father and Karma, he feels alright it's just that dialysis is a necessary evil. I sit with him
to keep him company while he is on the machine.

I got a lot more out of the movie, it's just going to take awhile to process it all, like in the beginning of the movie,
the bar scene there is a guy at the bar they focus on for a second, he resembles Mr. Mustard from Sgt. Peppers
Lonely Hearts Club Band and he wears the same hat. Sgt. Peppers had it's allusion in the scene with Mr. Kite though
I don't quite get the accordion. Like I said, it's going to take awhile to process everything and I will definitely watch it
again.

My only question is, how did this movie get in under the radar? wasn't it promoted very well?

Yeah, they were kind of easy to pick up on. I do have a confession though, reading through this thread prior to
seeing the movie gave me the heads up to look for the innuendoes.  ;D

I wasn't exactly watching for them but some just hits you like a ton a bricks and you would have be totally clueless about the Beatles NOT to pick up on it.

Yes I had to watch it again, last night again, and maybe now it's like when we were searching for the "Paul is dead" mystery secret messages on the album covers and lyrics back in the 60's. So after watching it now with a searchring eye I did notice that Max's  mother was in a garden playing with flowers and then again in a hot house working with flowers and referring to her son's life..."Mother Nature's Son"...? or if that's not reaching would Martha Finny, Jude's un-wed mother's story be related to "Martha My Dear". What do you think Cat?

I didn't watch the movie for a second time yet but I did see bits and pieces. A couple of things I picked
up on. Prudence is definitely singing to the cheerleader in the "I Want To Hold Your Hand," segment.
That becomes evident later in the movie during the, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"  segment when she
is singing to Sadie. Lucy also asked Jude "You think Sadie Knows?" as she looks at Prudence out of the window.

If you have seen the movie "Yellow Submarine," did you happen to notice the Blue Guys the Blue Meanies used to
battle the people of Pepperland in the "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" segment.

I also got a personal memory from the movie. In the "With A Little Help From My Friends," scene there were
3 beers that they were drinking. Schmidt's, Pabst and Schlitz. These 3 beers were a big part of my teen years.
The cans and bottles were even true to the date, pull tabs and all.  ;D

And when you are out of Bud, tough Schlitz.  :D ;D ;D

(I'm wondering how many people remember THAT! 10 points for anyone who can tell me where that is from.  ;) Clue: It is NOT the Beatles.)

Hi guys! there was a Beatles Fest convention this past weekend here at the Crown Plaza Meadowlands in Jersey and I went, but only because the cast of "Across the Universe" were going to be present. Well guys it was worth the $47.00 price of admission. "Sexy Sadie" Dana Fuchs,  T.V. Carpio "Prudence" and Timothy Mitchum who sang "Let it Be" were there that evening. They had an half hour on stage enterview session and after they went off to sign autographs, this is where I got like a kid again, I was excited the whole hour waiting on line just to to see and to talk to and take a few pictures of Dana Fuchs and the others, but it was Dana who I was gaa gaaa over, she is a beautiful tall woman who's has a mesmerizing infectus voice and a just a real cool person you want to hang out with. When my turn came for the signing I talked to Timothy first while he signed my CD cover, we chit chated for a while on how he 's going to be a big star someday, and then T.V. next I told her it took me a couple of veiwings of the movie before I got to really know Purdence character, she smiled and winked as she signed my CD cover too, then it was my turn with Dana, I was Star struck with her, she took my breath away for a moment, she is so cool and beautiful I felt like a kid and I told her so too! I said " I don't know what you did to me but you put a spark into my life kiddo!" she laughed and said WOW! I did that? sorry, I said that's a good thing and now I want to buy your CD and I want you to sign that also she said "I'd love to
sign it". I took pictures as she signed  the front cover,I said Dana! would you please sign the inside also? "Sure! anything you want" she did and my CD cover too. She is cool and a good person too, then the body guards told me to leave please, I did but not before getting her attention again, thanking her and telling her I'm a fan for life...She smiled.

She has a blog on My Space and I e-mailed her telling her that her CD is terrific and especially her " Misery " cut, she is a terrific  singer and performer I'm going to go to her concerts when she's around the area, she 's that good.

well that's it for now, maybe I'll put the movie on again, yeah why not?

... and great three-part vocal harmonies

Beatle harmonies were nothing compared to the complex 5 and 6 part, double tracked to sound like 10 or 12 part, Beach Boy harmonies.

The creative genius of Julie Taymore directed this movie for the ages, a musical that captures the clashing of the culture changes of the 60's through the the genius of the Beatles songs...get it, watch it, let's talk. It's "right on!"

Hey Greenjello, it seems you, me and millions of other Beatle fans heard about it coming out to the movie theaters around  this same time last year and it seemed not to get any publicity when it finally did come out about late September/October 07'. It came and went in a flash without fanfair. Then in March of this year it was put on DVD and then is when it got noticed by the millions fans, it was a sleeper that took on a whole new life by millions of fans that said the same thing you said "I heard about it a while ago but never saw it playing anywhere".

Get the DVD, when you watch it for the first time you'll be amazed how a terrific movie and story line was created from the Beatles songs, I know you'll get a kick out of it and you'll want to watch it again and again to look for the little references and background tibits you missed in your past viewings...enjoy!

I still have yet to see this.  I'm not really one for rentiing movies, and I let my subscriptions to HBO, Showtime (and the like) go because it was costing too much.  I did see some clips of the songs on youtube and it looks like a really good movie.  Maybe someday I'll get around to seeing it.  Perhaps the library will have a copy.
