Subject: Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs
Written By: whistledog on 01/20/07 at 3:02 am
Does anyone else like Australian legend Billy Thorpe?
Though he never made a big splash in North America, he did have two top 40 hits in Canada. His only US hit was in 1979 with "Children of the Sun" which over the years has become a well-loved rock classic ...
Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs
1965 - Over the Rainbow
Billy Thorpe
1979 - Children of the Sun
1981 - In My Room

I think I just assumed he had chart hits in the US because he lived in Cal for 18 years ! What on earth did he do there for all that time ?
Love him to bits - in all his incarnations.

"Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy" is at the top of the list with "Over the Rainbow" close behind :)

He didn't really cause much of a stir in Britain (despite several tours)...and the only British release I can find of his, is the obligatory 'Over The Rainbow' (which is quite a collector's item...)

children of the sun is a rockin' tune. i totally remember it, it was like, a phenomenon over here. smash, smash hit. to be honest, though, i never heard that he ever did another song! :-[
i heard this weird rumor that he used to run a dollhouse shop for a long time.

Billy Thorpe
1979 - Children of the Sun
I remember that song from, I believe, June of 1979 (right before Supertramp took over the radio). It's one of those songs that make you remember things about the past -- and for me, early summer of 1979. I hear it about once every 10 years on the radio now.
To be honest, I never really cared for it back then. I remember thinking how it sounds like somebody spent a lot of time in the recording studio and got overly happy with all the neat effects they could do. A little too over the top at the time.

oh yes. i'm in billy thorpe heaven.
sorry, my verdict: musically, it's retarded. in terms of gorgeous vocals, arrangement, production, and just general rocking out and tapping into the zapgeist, it's incredible.

"This sort of loud, roaring, howling, ferocious, sort of pub-based
bluesy rock and roll, and Thorpe was that incredibly powerful voice.
"There was something that was just primal about Thorpe's blood-curdling
roar. There was nobody like him on the stage."
Are they talking about Billy "Children of the Sun" (waiting for the Mothership) Thorpe ?
Billy we hardly know you.

I loved Children of the Sun! That was an awesome song, especially if you were listening with headphones. :)
I also like East of Eden's Gate and Free Enterprise
Shame he was taken so soon :(

It was a very sad thing, his passing.
If anyone is interested, see if you can find his release from the 70's :
"Most People I Know (Think That I'm Crazy)"
Great song ;)
I found 2 clips on Youtube - unfortunately one's a shocking live version - the other is much better but here seems to be a connection issue - but I will put the link here in case you have more luck than me :)
