Subject: With the Holiday Season approching, do you have a favorite song?
Written By: hot_wax on 11/12/06 at 11:44 pm
There's so many Christmas and Holiday songs that are sung by just about every singer who ever lived since the begining of time ranging from the Religious Carols to Rock and Roll dance music and we all have our favorites...me, I like many of the Carols and my favorites are from "The Perry Como Christmas Album",1968, "Christmas Eve" and " Oh Holy Night" cuts are the best versions I've heard. In modern holiday songs I like alot of them, but Brook Benton's "This Time of the Year" and The Salsoul Orchestra's "Christmas Time" are my favorites.
You have any favorites?

I guess when it comes to Christmas music I love the old stuff. Perry Como-"Seasons Greetings", Nat King Cole-"The Christmas Song", Andy William-"Merry Christmas". My dad has these albums when we were kids and we'd listen to them constantly during the holidays. I think I'm going to order copies for my collection.

I like the old stuff as well. I also like Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers Christmas songs (and this is coming from someone who usually can't stand country music)....there's something about their Christmas music that puts me in the holiday mood.

Silver Bells - Diana Ross & The Supremes
Celebrate Me Home - Kenny Loggins
The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year - Johnny Mathis

As far as "traditional" songs go, "Jingle Bells" is probably my favorite. I also like alot of holiday songs pop artists have done (I learned about some of them back from when VH1 played Christmas stuff in the early '90s - they even used to flip the "V" in the logo upside down to make it look like a Christmas tree). Some of my favorites:
"Jingle Bell Rock" by Hall and Oates
"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by John Cougar Mellencamp
"Christmas All Over Again" by Tom Petty
"Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney
"Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You" by Billy Squier
Would "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" count? ;D I think it came out in the early '80s by a band named Irish Rovers, it also had a music video too. I also like a couple Weird Al originals ("Christmas at Ground Zero" and "The Night Santa Went Crazy").

Yeah your right, country singers do give a certain warmth to the old and new Christmas songs, you could feel their sincerity in their voices, maybe it's because of their Bible up-bringing that most give credit to and not just singing them for the money. Elvis sang Carols from the heart.

Hi Tanya, David Bowie and Bing Crosby's "Little Drummer Boy" version is the best I've heard for a duet, it's just thier different sound that catches my ear from the big chorus sound the song was made for.

Those are good, I think Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" is the Grand Daddy of all Christmas Songs. Elvis's "Blue Christmas" is probably played the most on the radio during the Holiday season...that was from his "Come Back" TV show, when I thought he became cool again...NOT!!, he went to Vegas and sold out again...the bum.

"Little Drummer Boy" David Bowie and Bing Crosby

"This Christmas" Donny Hathaway
-- Good pick. It's hard to believe that song is from 1968. 8)
"Little Drummer Boy" David Bowie and Bing Crosby
-- I saw that 1977 television special when David "Rebel, Rebel" Bowie sang that song with Bing. Talk about strange. Probably one of the oddest things in television history, or at least that's what I thought when I saw it. :o

For Christmas songs I always like to hear
1. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas -- Judy Garland
2. The Christmas Song ("Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...") -- Nat King Cole (written by Mel "The Velvet Fog" Torme & Robert Wells)
3. A Charlie Brown Christmas songs -- Vince Guaraldi Trio
4. Merry Christmas, Darling -- The Carpenters
5. This Christmas -- Donny Hathaway
6. The classic Christmas standards: Joy to the World, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Silent Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Deck the Halls, Do You Hear What I Hear?, The First Noel, etc.
And don't you think Thanksgiving is getting short changed this year? I've seen Christmas stuff all over the place since the beginning of November.

I heard a brief clip of a Carol of the Bells parody in a commercial the other night. I'd never heard it before. It was amusing, but of course, now I can't remember any of the words to look up the song.
I remember singing Carol of the Bells in middle school choir, which I've always loved the song since then. Also have a favorite "church" song around Christmas time, called Emmanuel (or something like that).
Where I grew up there is a local singer who puts on a kick butt concert each year, he had minor success in the 80s with a couple songs "Karen" and "Vitamin L". His name is B. E. Taylor. I love love love him, although I've missed his concert for the past several years. He's put out two Christmas CDs, thus far with some non-traditional music, which I adore. http://www.betaylor.com/music.htm I am going to have to buy the Christmas 2 album just for the songs "Light in the stable" and "I will remember".

In 1948 Mitchell Parrish and Leroy Anderson wrote "Sleigh Bells" music and words but the orchestra version you're talking about, I think, is the most recognizable version as a Christmas song around the world, and it dosen't mention anything about Christmas at all.

I don't know much about "The Nutcracker" only that I see it's a popular Christmas story. Maybe someday I'll take my grand daughter to see it at The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Theater in NYC, I'm pretty sure they put it on every Christmas time and see what it's all about.

You should take her. I would probably have never gone to a ballet, but after seeing The Nutcracker on PBS starring Mikhail Baryshnikov, we started going to see it live with full orchestra & made it an annual tradition. The excellent music was compsed by Tchaikovsky & is arraigned so well with the story. Kids love it as well as adults. It really makes it feel like an old fashioned Christmas.

I was reading today's Sunday Star Ledger newspaper and in the entertainment section there was a listing of all the local performing art theaters in NJ by counties that will be hosting "The Nutcracker" for the Christmas season...dozens all over the state of Jersey, it's more popular then I imagined, so now I don't have to go NYC afterall, and next year when she's 2 1/2 years old I'll take her to the Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, she'll understand it better then...me too!

I adore the Nutcracker - my mom used to take me every year when I was little. My sisters, nieces and I are all going together this year. You've gotta see it at least once, hot wax!
Also, speaking of Carol of the Bells, there is a group called Phantom Planet that has a version of it played by the electric guitar. It's really cool.
Over the weekend I was going through some Christmas music, and re-discovered the Ray Conniff Singers. My dad was always playing their records when I was little, and when I listened to them, I about fell off my chair. It brought back so many great memories!

I also love Emmanuel-which is actually an "Advent carol" as oppose to a Christmas carol. (I am assuming you are thinking of "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel").
Cat, only you can come up with Christmas songs like that...cool, where can I get them?
Well, the closest I could find is here: http://www.amazon.com/Portrait-P-D-Q-Bach-Harris-Poor/dp/B000000ELL/ref=pd_sim_m_5/102-1657783-5858525
Track #12 you can listen to the first part which but you can only hear "Put the Yule Log on, Uncle John". (BTW, when I was in chorus in my first year of college, we did "Put the Yule On" & "Good King Kong Look Out". To this day, I have yet to hear "O Little Town of Hackensack". )
I love any music from The Nutcraker. we used to go to the Paramount theater in Oakland and catch the ballet in December & it was really good until due to lack of funds they eliminated the orchestra and used recorded music.
I used to LOVE the Nutcracker until I started dating Carlos. His son is a dancer and it seems like every year we have to suffer...er...watch the Nutcracker (the local production of it). He started out as the Cavalier, then was Clara's father (lighting the tree with a remote control ;D ;D) and then final the Nutcracker Prince (which he usually plays now in this local production). He told me that this year, he is doing it for another company and will be playing the part of Herr Drosselmyer. Yeah, we kind of got Nutcrackered out. ::)

I can see how you'd get a litle tired of it, seing it every year. Uncle Drosselmyer is my favorite character :) His son must be good, and this ballet can be very exacting and demanding of the dancers. I want to see it again, we usually go every other year & maybe we'll check out the San Francisco's ballet, which i hear is good.

Yep, that's the one. I didn't realize that it was for advent, but now that you mentioned it, It makes sense. Because if it were Christmas, He'd have already been born, and they wouldn't be singing Oh Come.

He is. He went from the Boston Ballet, to the Washington Ballet, to the Houston Ballet before calling it quits (due to injuries and the fact that these companies didn't utilize him like he wanted them to). He still dances for lesser known companies (including our local one-which is basically just a dance school) as a "guest artist". And sometimes he even teaches at the local place.
Yeah, I'm bragging about my step-son. ;D ;D

The Paramount has day shows and afterwards kiddies can attend The SugarPlum Fairy party. Did you guys do that? ;D The Arabian Coffee segment is the very sultry, seductive harem dance with 1 man & 1 woman, it's very cool and the music is quite soothing. It's in the section with French BonBons, Chinese Tea, and the Russian dance. I may have to put the cd on when I get home.

My mother sang "I Wonder as I Wander" in church for Christmas mass many, many years ago. To this day, I have a hard time listening to it because I heard her practice it and practice it and practice it, etc.

I know "I wonder as I Wander" from Berio. The composer Luciano Berio arranged it beautifully for his suite of "Folk Songs."

When I posted this subject I was hoping for the responce that it did get. We replied and shared our favorite Holiday songs over the past month, fun ones, solemn ones and weird ones that you wish would never hear again. Overall I see that we enjoy this time of the year alot due to the special songs and music written special for it. No matter faith or beliefs we practice some of those songs do lift our spirits if not for God but to do God's work for each other in the charity we extend to the less fortunate. Maybe we should play holiday music all year long on the radio...you never know, it could help.
Well, it's all over until next year, except for one more song, the only holiday song left that everyone's faith will be singing..."Auld Lang Syne".
"God Bless you with a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2007 New Year"... it's always fun, your friend Hot Wax

I think it's a winner for the ages, I like it a lot...it's been in my head now for a week and it will be there after holidays... a little help with who sings it, please?

I don't konw who that is, but it sure was a good song and it was a breath of friesh air. I think the recording is on the soundtrack to Love, Actually.
"Love" sound track? I'll look for it on line and get it just for that song only, it might help the echos in my head.

^^^ that wouldn't be the Mariah Carey Christmas song, would it? "All I want is you for Christmas" ???
I can't wait until someone comes out with some new holiday numbers. I get tired of the same old songs and now I can't take holiday music!
I like the old songs. I hate that we're opposites here K. I like the old traditional ones. my hairstylist gave me a xmas CD last week of Christmas songs, and I didn't recognize a single one. I did think it was Sting on one of them, so that's cool 8)
...I'm a "White Christmas" Bing Crosby kind of guy when it comes to fav Christmas tunes
and I always gotta hear me some Schroeder on the piano from Charlie Brown Christmas

I love every song from "The Nutcracker" especially Coffee (Arabian dance)
we would see the ballet almost every Christmas at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland but their funding has caused them to eliminate the live orchestra and use recorded music so it's not as good now.

Awww, seriously? I was actually considering going this year, as I hadn't been since 1991...when the orchestra was live. Ahhh, bah humbug, ;D

yeah, that's what happened last year unless this year they've recieved funding. there are also less show dates :(. So Krissy, have you been to the San Francisco ballet for the Nutcracker? we've only gone to Oakland, many times and we loved it. we probably were there when you were there. so much fun dressing up, and the Paramount is beautiful, & historic.

I remember we went to a matinee of the Oakland Nutcracker, and it was during the week! There weren't a lot of people there besides my classroom (it was a fieldtrip for us 3rd graders). I believe I've never been to the SF ballet my whole life, but I'd also love to see the SF version, and if it's a live orchestra, the better!

you're welcome. I wasn't sure if that was the title, & I did post that I like the more traditional songs, but that newer song by Mariah is one that I do like a lot .

did you & your class go to the Sugar Plum Fairy party afterwards? that used to be held after matinees. We only went to the evening shows. Diane & Julie & I have been fans of the Oakland Nutcracker since Julie was a little girl. The best tv version at Chrsitmas time is the one with Mikhail Baryshnikov. we have an old copy on VHS I taped back in the early 90's from PBS, Don't tell Lady Di, but I got her this DVD for Christmas

I cast my vote for "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" although, there is a line in the song where there are two different versions. As someone else said on the Net: "Just for the record, I'm a 'Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow' rather than a 'hang a shining star upon the highest bough' kinda guy."
The song was first sung in "Meet Me In Saint Louis" by Judy Garland with the "muddle through" line. during World War II, this seemed very apt. Following the war, however, Frank Sinatra hired a song writer just to rewrite that one line to make it more up-beat, and after many cups of coffee and handfuls of never-to-be-restored hair, he came up with the clever if contrived "shining star" substitute. The original seems apt again, what with the various wars around the world. Vanessa Williams sings the "shining" version, James Taylor is committed to the "muddle" version, and Jane Monheit blends both into her rendition.

Nice info! I agree, the whole "muddle through" makes the song more meaningful and slightly melancholy in a nice way. One of my favourites too.

I do not recall a Sugar plum Fairy party afterwards, but that would have been a lot of fun! I think I have seen that TV version with Baryshnikov around the holidays or maybe even on Christmas day. Ohh, I bet Lady Di will LOVE that DVD for many years. Great idea!!
