Subject: "I Say a Little Prayer"-Aretha or Dionne?
Written By: velvetoneo on 07/14/06 at 7:01 am
Of the two versions of "I Say a Little Prayer" by Hal David/Burt Bacharach, do you prefer Dionne Warwick's 1967 version (US and Canada #4) or Aretha Franklin's 1968 version (US #10) ?

'Reefer's...
There was also a version by Bomb The Bass in the 80s, which is best avoided!

Definitely Aretha Franklin's version.
It had more soul.
I cant say anymore about it except that the recording of it is so soulfully eerie to listen to.

This is close, but I went with Dionne's version. In Aretha's version, the backing vocals sing the whole chorus, but they're not credited more. Like it's not Aretha Franklin featuring ________ or and ________. They also say the "prayer for you" part during the verses.

I'm choosing the option not up there; both.

There was also a country version in the early 70s as a duet between Glen Campbell and Anne Murray. I like that one

Dionne's.
Hal David+Burt Bacharach+Dionne Warwick were always a good song mix in the '60s.

I love Aretha but Dionne's version is purer. It just works!
How come I say a little prayer by the cast of my best friends wedding wasn't an option? 8)

Two outstanding versions of a well conceived song. I love it!
I love Aretha but Dionne's version is purer. It just works!
Agreed. Although I don't always prefer purity - depends on my mood... ::)
I'm choosing the option not up there; both.
I'm with you - both for me! ;)

Normally I would pick Aretha - no contest. But in this case I'm going to have to go with Dionne. I just like hers better.
