Subject: Percentage of Women who wore pants/jeans...

Written By: Trimac20 on 03/12/06 at 9:36 am

I know the question a bit off-the-wall, but I wonder if any surveys have been done on the percentage of women who wore jeans/pants or 'slacks' as they used to say, over the 60s (a good indication of 'traditionalism'). Of course, most that wore skirts, dresses, also probably wore pants, but was there a survey which asked what, 'would you feel comfortable wearing pants?' I notice this from the difference in footage of the early 60s, and say the late 60s (Woodstock) when jeans with bell-bottoms were ubiquitous among both sexes.

Perhaps another survey could be, what was the change in percentage of women who wore bras throughout the 60s.

I don't know about percentages but I can speak for this one woman-yes I wore pants/jeans (when I could). In the 60s, I went to a school where we HAD to dresses/skirts. But when I got home, the dress came off and the pants went on. But I was just a kid then. In the 70s and beyond, I always wore jeans to school and work (if I could). I was in the military in the 80s and usually wore pants but a few times I had to wear a skirt. Now, jeans most of the time but every now and again, a dress.

When I was in 1st grade, 1967ish, we had to wear dresses or skirts, but in the winter, we could wear pants under them, but had to take them off when we got to school.  I don't think it went any longer than 1967 or '68. After that, I wore jeans most of the time. Especially in the '70s, and the more worn out the better.
