Cathy's Clown was Billy R. and "Bird Dog" was Richie C. those two were my favorites for personal reasons. I first heard "Bird Dog" while walking through the Chelse pool tunnel to the beach in Long Branch, NJ. Some guy had it blasting on his radio in the tunnel it had a great echo and the song was different it had the coolest lyrics for a rock and roll song for it's time.
Rock and Roll had no boundries in the 50's, and a lot of material was counrty based re-created in the rock and roll style. They straddled the line being rock and country and started defining the rock and roll types of music in the 50's. Their music was Rock but their lyrics were sort of country like, they told stories like a hill billy song with a rock and roll sound...and counrty rock was established. Johnny Cash, Jimmy Dean, and many others straddled that line having top ten songs on both rock and country charts. It's all in the down home stories they sang about..."I walk the line" ," Big John"," Mule Skinner Blues", "Rock Island line" all great songs where on the rock and roll charts and where country songs...it's the best of the both worlds. Maybe it's a vague answer to your question.
