Subject: The ultimate continous 60's Lyric game :)
Written By: holicman on 05/17/05 at 12:28 am
I hope this takes off in this section, because its something that can be related to all decade posting sections.
Anyway the way it works is that One person starts by quoting a part of a song lyric from the sixties and the person who gets it right the quickest gets to continue on and choose a song lyric to continue the quiz on :)
anyway I will start it off and see how this takes off.............good luck :)
" Whenever I.............whenever i'm away from you
My Alibi is telling people i dont care for you
maybe im just hanging around with my head up
upside down its a pity, i cant seem to find someone
who's as pretty and lovely as you............. "

this is a little more commercial than that.
If i told you who it was by you would get it straight away, but think British Invasion.

There used to be a thread like this in the 70s section...
...until I killed it stone dead with a horrendously obscure lyric - oh well...!!
Them two lines above are from 'Somebody Help Me' by the excellent Spencer Davis Group...
Hopefully this won't be too obscure...either one of two artists...
'...Like the sun it shines, endlessly it shines...'

Everlasting love by the Towncriers or U2 :)
the Towncriers are an aussie band who went to no.1 with that song in 1967 i think.
I am sure there is another band there that did a version.............It might have been the Association ???
Anyway, here is my lyric :)
"So now ive lost my way, i need help to show me things to say
so give me your love, before mine fades away ............... "

Good Lord! Who let U2 loose on this one...?!!
I am sure there is another band there that did a version.............It might have been the Association ???
The one I had in mind was The Love Affair - it caused a big uproar at the time when it was revealed that the band never played on the record...
Robert Knight did the original, but it's quite insipid in comparison...
Anyway, here is my lyric :)
"So now ive lost my way, i need help to show me things to say

Annoyingly familiar...it'll come...

It's 'The Israelites' by Desmond Dekker & The Aces...
It was the first 'reggae' #1 in Britain and is sometimes reffered to as 'Me Ears Are Alight', due to the heavy Patois...
Two possible artists for this, depending where you're from...
'...a king, a clown, or a poet...'

Heh! Pictoral clue, bj26...that makes it clearer - thanks for that!
It's 'I'm Gonna Love You Too' - The Hullabaloos
Despite their 'Britishness' they never had a hit here...but the song made a bit of a comeback in the 70s when Blondie recorded it (on 'Parallel Lines' if memory serves...)
Here's another 'Limey' act that did pretty well everywhere...

Here's a wild guess - Let's Twist Again Like We Did Last Summer by Chubby Checker?
Good guess sir, it's from 'that era', but not right...
Or it might be 'Twistin' by the pool'?
The old Dire Straits song? No, , they wasn't around in the 60s, karen (although some unkind souls may say it certainly seemed like they was!)
In actual fact, this isn't a 'twist' record (it's too slow for a start!) and I've mentioned the group in one of my previous questions...

The one I was thinking of was more of a Beach Boys sound than Dire Straits

Mmm...getting closer, especially with a 'falsetto' voice in there - not Beach Boys tho' (and still no twisting!)

The groundbreaking 'Runaway' by the brilliant, yet troubled, Del Shannon...
(For the uninitiated, you should also check out his cover of 'From Me To You', arguably as good as The Beatles' original...)
Fast forward a year and a fraction, and you'll come across this little gem...
'Why don't you come out to my twist party...'
Is it by Jan and Dean? If not, how bout a clue, please.

Not Jan & Dean and not The Sunrays (great song, btw!) but it was a group (although later, the focus would shift to one person within that group...)
How 'bout if I put in the backing vocals (in brackets)...?
'...why don't you come out (come out) to my twist party...'
Title? Think Spanish wine...

'A World Of Our Own' - The Seekers (t'riffic!)
This next one is truly an all-American song sung by an all-American cutie, but incredibly enough it was first recorded by a British lady (namely Helen Shapiro, whose version wasn't that much cop, truth be told...)
'...play all my records, keep dancing all night...'

no, I said One hit wonder.
Devil woman was from the 70's, and Cliff Richard is not a one hit wonder.
The song was "Elouise" by Barry Ryan.
Heres one a little Easier.

There were actually many, many people who did this song-so I will take anyone of them as the right answer.

'The Windmills Of Your Mind' - Noel Harrison (son of Rex) was one of many many artists who attacked it...Dusty Springfield was also a notable...
Film was 'The Thomas Crown Affair'...
Here's a nice one (before someone had the audacity to 'cover' it...)
'...if I get scared you're always around...'

YAY!!!! You got it. I have Dusty Springfield's version which I don't care too much for. Hubby likes Johnny Mathis' version of it but I have yet to hear it.
