Actually, the Contours' version was the original (1962)...it was resurrected for use in 'Dirty Dancing'...

Their version never charted in the UK, although it was a strong seller - the honours here went to two 'Limey' covers - The DC5 (in a small way) and a frantic 'beat' version by Brian Poole & The Tremeloes (in a big way...#1 in '63)

Yep, I would have said the Brian Poole/Tremeloes was the best known rendition  :)

According to my very accurate, reliable Billboard chart book, the Dave Clark Five version peaked at #11 in the U.S. in 1964.
