The Doors were a great band. Jim was very dramatic.but those were the times. I've since grown abit tired of them. I even think they (he) may be abit over rated. I'll hafta get out my doors albums and give a listen. It has been awhile. the radio overplays some and doesn't play alot of their other tunes.
I'll put Waiting for the Sun on.

There were many bands in the 60s which just broke through and were geniunely talented...the Doors were not one of them. There is no doubt they are hugely overrated, the only thing good about their songs was the keyboard playing. Just another bluesy 'rock' band...their 'best hits' were not even as good as medicore songs by other bands. But don't let me even get started...

I think the Doors were a bit underrated. There music was very unique-not sounding like anyone else. However, Jim's antics were very controveral. Many people had a hard time seperating the antics from the music. So, I think because of Jim's eccentricness, the music got lost-which is a shame.

And from a person sitting on the exact opposite from your statement...I think an IMO (In My Opinion) would be nice, especially if you've decided to give them such a horrid review ;)

well rocknrollfan, it seems like you like the doors.whats ur favorite song? i would have to say the end...or love me two times. actully i can honestly say that there is not a single doors song that i do not like. except for their remake of gloria.i thought it was kind of repetative. anyway, i noticed that most peole posting on this subject are in their 30's or above. it may seem kinda creepy because most young people are into punk and rap, but im only 14. does anyone actually know anyone young that likes the doors?

Out of thier two 11 minute plus songs, I much prefer "When The Music's Over" from the Strange Days LP. All my kids love The Doors ;)

As I said I'm not the biggest music expert. But the appreciation of good music is a skill we all have (ok, well judging by current music I'm beginning to question this). So I'm just wandering, what is your reasoning when it comes to judging how 'good' the Doors or any other band are (musically)? It's a personal thing I know, but for the Beatles' or Stones' or whoever to be so popular there must have been something 'objectively' good about their music (in human terms). While I've only heard the Best of the Doors (which should be, well, their best) they simply do not appeal to me. For instance, it is forgivable the songs don't have very distinct melodies, a recogniseable melody is not a requirement for a good song, but apart from that the songs seem unstructured, and lacking. The only real songs I like of theirs were 'Break On Through (to the other side)', 'People are Strange' and 'Alabama Song' which had a circusy feel to it. I don't see what was so great about their songwriting, etc or why Jim Morrison is so revered to this days. You'll probably me trying to pop-culture phenomenon the Doors are, but then again...

While I don't agree with your opinion of The Doors/Morrison...I do respect it ;)

same here. i do not agree with it, but i do respect it. and ifyou heard the best of the doors album, there is only a small fraction of what they did. try to get ahold of the doors legacy album. it gets a few of every album into the compilation and gets a flavor of each variety of songs. frankly i think that the doors 'best of' album isnt that good.

I love the Doors. Especially Jim Morrisson. His lyrics and poems were absolutely incredible. If you really think through what words he's speaking, everything begins to make sense and we understand his perception of life and the universe. Even though sometimes he was a little crazy, it was just his way of expressing his ideas and thoughts to people. If he simply just told people how he felt then he would never have had anyone actually try to understand him or really care about him. It was all his master plan to get people off their asses and understand their own feelings as well as his. This helps me enjoy his music with an even greater intensity.
The name "The Doors" comes from Aldous Huxley's book "The Doors of Perception." The name of this book comes from a quote by William Blake: "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite."
In my mind, such creativity waters the roots of greatness, and The Doors were just that: greatness.

It's just a shame that Manzerek and Kreiger have decided to sell-out...Densmore is Morrison's only true bandmate

I just saw the 1991 Doors movie with Val Kilmer...hmmm, not the best true-life story I would think. I don't think Kilmer was a very good choice as Jim Morrison.

Every once in a while I love to crow...I got to see the Doors... I know I have mentioned it before, but as you get older and things slow down, remembering your glory days (and telling them over and over and over again), is almost as much fun as when you were there. Seriously though, the Doors had a very distinctive sound, and Morrison was a great songwriter/singer, and (I know I've used this before but it seems to say it all) he exuded an an irresistible sexuality the was felt was probably felt all the way back into the last row balcony. The music has stood the test of time, and I believe, will continue to strike a chord(no pun intended).

I think Kilmer did a good job with the crap that Oliver Stone wrote for him.
