Subject: I'm kind of embarrassed to ask this..

In "The Long and Winding Road" by the Beatles, which Beatle is singing?  I always assumed it was John but now I'm not so sure.

I was always sure it was Paul. Funny how you should be so familiar with their voices and you still can't tell. I've listened to many Beatles' songs and I have trouble telling who sings what (especially earlier songs). I think it was Paul but I'm not 100%.

Always believed it to be Paul

It's also the rough rule of thumb in acertaining who wrote the song...e.g.,

'Long And Winding Road' - Paul singing = Paul's song

'Strawberry Fields' - John singing = John's song

'Something' - George singing = George's song

Not always 100% spot-on, but it's good enough for me...!

I could always tell them apart easy. To me it seemed that you could hear a more apparent 'Scowser' accent in John's singing..

The song was written by John and Paul. Paul contributes lead vocals and John backs him up.

On the subject of accents when singing, it's interesting how the British Invasion with groups such as the Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Manfredd Man, Peter & Gordon etc. introduced a 'British' or at least 'non-American' singing accent to mainstream pop? Before which most groups would try to emulate the American accent. Nowadays there are many American bands trying to imitate the 'Britpop' accent popularised by Blur, Oasis.etc.

Now that we're on the subject...
This Boy - John and George
Chains - John and George
Please Pleas Me - John and Paul
I'll be Back - John and Paul
I want to hold your hand - John, Paul, and George
Correct me if I'm wrong, Paul!

I believe that John played the Bass on 'Long And Winding Road'.

I don't have much trouble distinguishing their voices

Yes it's Paul

As someone said, the person singing the song is usually the person who wrote it, regardless if it's credited to "lennon and mcartney"

This is especially true starting from "The White Album" and on.  After the death of brian epstein, they pretty much stopped collaborating on sings.

This was a very nice song, sad, but nice. Paul did a good job on this!

It's only taken me near-enough a year to reply (!), but...

'This Boy' and 'I'll Be Back' are mainly John's writing...he supplies the 'breaks' in the middle of the songs...

'I Want To Hold Your Hand' is a straight collaboration between John & Paul, which was written 'with America in mind'...it seemed to work!

'Please Please Me' was John's, although vocal duties are near-enough shared throughout (as I said, the theory wasn't always 100% spot-on...!)

'Chains' was actually a Gerry Goffin/Carole King number, although John & Paul did aspire to write like them...
