Subject: 60's parody/comedy songs
Written By: Rex on 02/21/05 at 4:59 pm
There were several comedy/parody songs recorded by conventional artists in the 60's. A few of my faves:
More Money for You and Me by the Four Preps
Teenage Failure by Chad & Jeremy
She Can't Find Her Keys by Paul Petersen
Hanky Panky (the Neil Diamond version)
What other songs would you add?

I wouldn't imagine you'd have heard of 'em, but Britain's Barron Knights were the undisputed kings of parody in the 60s and had several successful parody records to their name (in medley format, along the same lines as that Four Preps number...)
And they're still going strong today, bless 'em...!

year 1963
Ray Stevens - Harry the hairy ape ;D
Well, a strange thing happened the other night
You won't believe it, but I swear it's true
Harry the hairy ape made his escape from the city zoo
& under cover of darkness he made his way
To the middle of the municipal park
& he hid in the bushes & waited for somebody to come
Walkin' along by hi'self in the dark
Then along come somebody not suspectin' nothin'
Harry jump out of the bushes all of a sudden
Beat on his chest (sound effect of this action)
Jump up & down & he say:
Wooo-hoo-hee-hee-hoo-hoo...
Which is Harry-Ape talk for "Boo, I betcha I scared you, ha ha!"

I just joined this group. For now, I'm trying to find the artist who did a funny spoof of
Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John". It must not have made Billboard's Top 100 because I can't
find it anywhere. The name of the spoof is "Big Bad Brucie". I heard it played a lot when it
came out. It is about a gay hairdresser. His salon catches fire and he is saved but runs back
in to get his purse. *S*
Another spoof I like is based on "Leader of the Pack" by the Shagri-Las. It had a novelty
version done by the Detergents called "Leader of the Laundromat"! *S*
I'm glad I found this site. If anyone knows who did the 1st song please let me know.
Thanks ... DC47

There are links to play various spoofs of Big Bad John. Maybe one of them is the song you are looking for.

2 songs i can think of are Lily the Pink by Scoffold, and a song called "they're coming to take me away haha".
Anything also by the goodies may have been worth a laugh, but they made their name in the seventies :)

"Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" by Allan Sherman
Also, I don't know who sang this, but I once heard a funny song from around that era about "Big Fat Irving," a cowboy who was "the 142nd fastest gun in the west..."

That was a popular song on the Dr. Demento radio show...find his cite and maybe connect with him.
I wonder if the Irving song was on the album called "Songs My Jewish Mother Sang me"? Maybe that's a made up name in myn head but I thought that was an album title.

The song is "The Ballad of Irving", circa 1966 by Frank Gallop. He also did "Son of Irving". There are just too many comedy/parody songs to list from the 60's.

I remember the Ballad of Irving. I think I may have it on an old tape (that I recorded the Dr. Demento show with back in the dark ages.)

;D ;D"I Want My Baby back" by Jimmy Cross, and let's just say it has nothing to do with Chili's!
OMG, I had that on an old Doctor D LP, I wish I still had it.
Ya gotta love a love song about necrophilia.
And The Ballad Of Irving, from an LP called "When You're In Love, The Whole World Is Jewish".
There is also a version of Big Bad John, as sung by the "Cajun Queen" that was called My Big John. Another reason I can kill my ex for stealing my 45 collection.
Some of my faves are:
Beer Beer Bottla Beer, by Acey-Ducey
You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd, by Roger Miller
The Thing, by Phil Harris (Oh, you'll never get rid of the *bump-da-dump*, no matter what you do!)
One Piece At A Time, by Johnny Cash
The Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins, by Leonard Nimoy (yes, Mr. Spock!)
Sunday Driving, by Jerry Lewis
Lucy In The SKy With Diamonds, by William Shatner http://www.sleeplessknights.com/entertainment/shatner.html

I've got a few awful ones for ya-
"Santa Claus is Surfin' to Town" by Soupy Sales
"Jingle Bells Imitations" by Bobby Rydell & Chubby Checker. The real Bobby Rydell & Chubby Checker doing imitations of singers like Elvis, Fats Domino, and others singing "Jingle Bells"!
Then there's "Presidential Press Conference" by The Sickniks - a Kennedy imitator fielding questions from imitators of different rock singers of the day. My favorite one, imitating the bass singer on "Blue Moon":
"Boptybop Mr. President dangdadang do you dingdading think the education bill will be passed dingadongdooommm?"
"For your sake, sir, I certainly hope so."

I can't believe no one's mentioned Yellow Submarine by The Beatles.
Did you know that Soupy Sales' sons Hunt and Tony played drums and bass guitar respectively with Iggy Pop and Tin Machine?

I've got that lurking around somewhere...!
Going back even further, there was a similar-titled song called 'Tennessee Wig Walk' by Bonnie Lou (1953, I think) - novelty, but has a strange bit of RnB about it...!

not sure if these fit this category: bottle of wine-- the fireballs; something about everybody gettin stoned, dont remember name--bob dylan; something about uptight, out of sight, let it hang out, dont remember name--bill cosby, all late 60s.

The Bob Dylan song was called "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35". Again, those words aren't in the song, but...
And the Bill Cosby Song was called "Little Ol' Man". He kept telling a story about an old man saying he saw planes and elephants, and background singers sing the chorus of "Uptight" at different times.

I have a few Spike Jones CDs around. "Der Fuehrer's Face" is probably their most popular along with "Cocktails for Two". They also did a lot of Christmas stuff-which I'm sure EVERYONE knows "All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth" which isn't my favorite of their Christmas stuff. I like "I'm the Angel in the Christmas Play."
FYI: Doodles Weaver who did a lot with Spike Jones is Sigourney Weaver's uncle.
